Good Day
My 66 Coronet runs great, does not charge, wont run with the battery negative off. Alternator tests good, new voltage regulator. I am stumped so far.

I have a 66 Coronet with a 440 4 speed. I purchased the car this way. Changed from a 383 auto to a 440/4 in 1969. I have rebuilt the engine; Alum heads, Isky rockers, Comp Cam, 850 Holley and installed a MSD 6AL, Petronix 2 in stock distributor, Petronix coil.

This is my retirement gift to me.. :). haha. I am new to Mopars. Love driving it as long as the battery takes me...ugh.

The kid before me took the alternator wire and ran it right to the battery. The wiring harness in the engine compartment has been hacked on. The bulkhead connector is intact. We wired the MSD according to directions. Although I think we missed something here. My help are Chevy guys who are not familiar with Mopar wiring. I have read the MAD Article and I am in the process of doing his diagram. So far I have the 12 gauge to the starter relay from the alternator and I am digging under and into the dash to bypass the amp gauge and install a VDO volt gauge. I am having trouble IDing the correct wires under the dash.

Can anyone diagram how this all should be? Or any other suggestions? Thank you in advance

Sounds to me like your charge wire/cable is not making the circuit.

I would spend some serious time on getting the wiring straight, I think if you sort that out according to the factory wiring diagram. I think that if you focus on the getting the wiring right, the charging thing might fix itself to a degree.

If the engine runs, your MSD ignition is probably wired fine. With the components you've already tested as "good", it does sound like wiring. Like 70Chall said, the idea of running a large wire from the big post of the alternator is a good one....I've run mine straight to the + of the battery, but the big + cable at the starter is fine too. You should also check your field wires for 12V while running (either one or two, smaller wires going to the alternator)

Thank you all. I will post some pictures soon and do all the checks mention. More to follow by the end of the week.
