My biggest questions would be, is there an effective way to ship products like this without damaging them and could the shipping cost be kept at a minimum. gtx6970, please still check with your friend in case this doesn't work out. That's the hard part! Heavy cardboard tube but the ones I see bend. PVC tube to flexible. He better insure it!!! Start a thread somebody might know.

I think PVC tube is best also - but not cheap. I mailed something via UPS in PVC and they charged me a special handling fee. I asked why and she said round tubes roll off their conveyor systems. I think if I had put the tube in a long, square section box they would not have charged the extra fee.

I shipped a 66 Satellite quarter trim in a 4" PVC tube last winter through UPS, just had an extra handling fee due to the length. No issues, arrived in three days. Bought some PVC a couple weeks back and the price was almost double, ouch. Another thought would be to sandwich the molding between a couple 2x6 boards, should be plenty strong and less than $18 for two compared to almost $24 just for the PVC pipe. You only get one chance to ship it safely.

Sounds like a guy should invent square end caps for plumbing. Yeah, I looked at Menards and they want $21 for 4 inch. It would fit in 3 inch schedule 40, but I wonder how stiff that is in 7 feet.

If the box is 2 inches in all directions, they have to cover the insurance, but insurance doesn't cover the effort of finding another one, and what a waste of a good part.

The 3" has too much flex for me at that length. That's why I used the 4". 2x6 boards solve the roll off issues, and for a somewhat flat molding might be the easiest to do. 2x4's might work but would need to be very straight to protect the edges of the molding. It's going to be costly no matter how its shipped.

Edit: Remember that either the wood or the PVC can be reused for other projects around the shop, helping to offset the initial cost of getting it shipped.

Trim like that I ship in vacuum pipe 2", drainage pipe 3-4", or concrete form pipe up to 10". Works every time.
