This is part of another thread I started, but wanted to make a new one in case someone with the answer didn’t read the other because of the title. Long story shower I had to replace my turn signal switch so while I had the wheel off I wanted to address any other issues.

Ever since I’ve had the car I’ve had to keep the horns disconnected because they’ll go off randomly when I turn the wheel. All the wires seem to be good, so any suggestions?

I’d like to fix up the column and any issues while I’ve got it apart so any recommendations on things to check/clean/inspect? I know it’s hard to say anything without seeing it but thought I’d ask.

The little cone/cover part that spins around the shaft right below the turn signal lever spins but for the life of me I can’t figure out what it does.

Yes, mine did that. Be certain that that pieces of metal (not sure what to call it) is not touching the shaft. It has to be centered perfectly. If it touched its making ground and the horn will sound.
I can look for a pic if I have one.

The horn relay always has 12Volts to it and the wire inside the column is the negative wire unlike most circuits in a car.
When you press the horn button you are actually closing the negative wire on the relay to body ground.
Hence the ring so even when you turn the wheel and press the button it can touch.
So if the horn goes off intermittently then the return spring in the horn button or insulation somewhere it is making a path to ground (negative - ) and the relay is closing.

Thanks guys, I’ll check and see if I can find where it might be touching.

Any idea on what the part that spins is? It’s the cone shaped piece that’s right below the turn switch housing. It does about a full spin then stops, and goes back the other way. As far as I can tell there’s nothing in it, just wraps around the shaft

It sounds like you are talking about the housing
That is not supposed to turn
there are bolts with flat heads that hold the collar down
If that is loose and turning it could be the cause of your problems by wearing out and shorting the horn wires

Here is a very good article on rebuilding the column

The metal piece that is held on with the philips head screws, has to perfectly centered.

I just uploaded pictures of mine. The only thing I removed is the switch. I don’t have those two bolts/nuts

Yes, you should have the piece of metal around the shaft that is held on with the philips head screws, the 2 screws are not in there right now. That is the piece that needs to be centered.

Ok cool. What about the two bolts/nuts in your picture? At about 1 and 7 o’clock. Just trying to log all the things that aren’t right. Thanks for your help!

Those two bolts are the ones that keep your 'bell' from spinning. The distal end of those bolts is square so they are a bit special. Its a bi### to get them just right. I believe they are friction fit or catch the square holes in the 'bell' to secure. I made some that had a bigger head to catch that 'bell' hole better. Here is a picture of the made bolt and original and the hole that I think they catch.

EDIT: This is pictures of an A body column. I forgot where I was.

In the pic I posted they look like castle nuts to me. But someone who has more experience with steering columns will have to answer more questions. It looks as if you're missing a bunch of stuff in there.
My suggestion, grab one from a yard, (66/67 Charger/Coronet/Belvedere) should all be the same minus the column shift.
Correction, 66 and 67 are different as 67 had a collapsible column.

Thanks guys!
Yeah I have the little metal plate but I thought the same when I saw other pictures-seems like I’m missing some stuff. I actually have another column that I bought a while back off a guy who was parting a car out and it doesn’t have the two bolts/nuts either. It is exactly the same as the one in my car. And I’ve never had issues steering some I’m more confused than anything as to why two different columns have the same issue. i did find that when I rotate the bell it reveals a large set screw— what it does I don’t know either .

I was looking at the aftermarket columns you can buy but they’re really expensive and I’m worried I’d potentially be in over my head trying to install it. I’ll keep searching the internet for maybe one someone has already restored or that is complete and compare
