I have a '67 R/T with a 440 Magnum and 727. I'm going to start driving the car this summer, and may freshen up the transmission soon because the car has it's original, unrestored driveline.

My question: Is the transmission behind the 440, the exact same set up as was put behind the Hemi? I seem to remember that the Hemi set-up used an extra steel and fiber in the clutch pack, where the 440 set-up had an extra thick rear steel to take up the space of one less clutch disk set.

It's been forever since I worked on a TorqueFlite, and want to know if they're different, can mine be modified to add the extra clutch disk set. Also, were there any other differences? I'd like to take advantage of any improvements I can make to the transmission if/when I pull it out for freshening.

the 541 is stout, and the Hemi has different components. But yours can be made to be the same. If you had a hrylser parts book, you could order it all. I'm sure others here know more about the details. I had a regular 440 auto converted to a Hemi application some years ago.
 
off the top of my head, the Hemi trans had a different front drum, kick down lever, 2nd band wider and governor weighs were different as well
 
That's one of the changes I made, the drum. I believe the bushings were also Bronze. Not to mention the Torque convertor /flex plate bolts are larger.
 
The input shaft was also different, as was torque converter.

The front clutch had 5 disc in the Hemi, and 440 had 4. The new after market disc are better than old ones, so in most cases you can get by with 4.
 
I've run stock 4 plate clutch, 3 pin planets, Raybestos tan frictions, and a turbo action manual valve body in a 700hp@3400lb (10.15@133) drag car with excellent results. When freshened at 700 passes everything was still in good shape. The Hemi drum and bands are heavy, hard to find and not necessary. You can buy thin front clutch frictions allowing you to install 5 in place of 4. I use them in my drag car with good results. Aprox 900 hp@3345lbs. (9.11@147)

Thanks everyone for their input! When the time comes, I will just perform a stock rebuild with a good quality rebuild kit. Also will probably go with the 5-clutch frictions as well. The stock rebuild will be more than adequate for my original, stock driveline. Just thought I would check to see if there was any cheap, easy "low hanging fruit" to exploit while I have it down.
