I could be wrong, but it appears that #4 is routed towards the direction of the drivers side and #7 along the passenger valve cover.

Nope. #7 goes to driver side. #4 to passenger side. The wire running alongside the passenger valve cover is #8.

Ok that explains that. Normally the rotor points to about where your #4 is now at tdc on compression when the distrib slot is lined up with the cam.
