Kind of an oddball question...but besides the 70 'bird..did the Satellite/RR/GTX/Belvedere ever run in NASCAR in the late 60's? If I remember correctly, Petty was running Fords those years...so who ran them, if at all?

Kinda curious, b/c i think itd be cool to do a "tribute" car to that era, but I can't seem to find any info or pictures of 68-69 online besides model cars.

Petty ran Plymouth's then.

yes the 68-70 RR was used buy Petty Teams & others before he jumped over to Ford because Plymouth wouldn't give him a Plymouth Aerocar like the Dodge Daytona, they finally did in 70 with the Superbird, Richard Petty, Bobby Allison, Pete Hamilton all won in 68-70 Plymouths

King Richard jumped ship in 1969.

As Budnicks stated above:

He ran the Ford Torino Talladega Aero-car
(Richard Petty had finished 2nd in NASCAR's Grand Nationals in 1969, driving a Ford Talladega.)

His "move" prompted Plymouth to create the Superbird for 1970 and that is what brought him back to Plymouth.

that's all I could post right now going to the clinic later

now im definitely thinking about doing a petty clone. I heart that they even have a paint job simulating the vinyl top.

They did run the Belvedere in earlier years 64-65-66-67 not sure if they ever did in 68-70 thou... I don't think the Satellite were in Nascar, unless it was an obscure team possibly or rebadged as a RR or Belvedere or something in various different years...

Petty ran the vinal top to hide how much they cheated the roof on the car. The windsheild was raked back and lowered, and the rear window was lowered on the top edge. The 68 Plymouth was probably Pettys most cheated car, trying to keep up with Fords areo cars, while driving a brick. The vynal top couldn't stay on at speed, and the roof work could be seen after it peeled back, that's why they are beating it with hammers in that picture. Nascar can't put a template on dented metal. If you look at the side shots of the car the windshield rake is obvious when compaired to a stock 68 Plymouth.

This is only slightly off topic but after they banned the Superbird and Daytona Petty ran the new fuselage-styled Chargers. That was obviously a very different shaped car and it changed dimensions quite a bit. How did it do? I'm sure it wasn't as sleek as the aero cars but was it better than the previous ones?

In ‘71 he ran a Satellite. I think he got the STP deal later that year or early ‘72. In ‘72 he ran the Plymouth for a few races then switched to the Charger. I do remember him saying that was his favorite stock car.

they 'may' (?) have been Satellites, but called them RRs

RR hoods & all

Speculation on my part, but I'm going to say it's the other way 'round. I've seen these '71 & '72 NASCAR Plymouths referred to as RR-based cars; and noticed they have the flatter Satellite hood. The Satellite hood looks aerodynamically better than the RR hood with those C-shaped decorative things that abruptly protrude up into the airstream twice per side. That's bound to dirty-up the airflow and is not desirable in aerodynamic terms. All that to say they used the Satellite hood on their road runners.
