I have a question regarding the trunk finish panel on a 68 GTX.I`m working on a factory silver car that the finish panel is sprayed over in black and has been that way since the owner bought the car used in 1969 and the owner has another panel that she bought with a trunk lid back in the mid 70`s from a junk yard and it`s a factory silver lid too, and the panel on it is sprayed black also.So did factory silver cars have the panel sprayed black so they wouldn`t blend in with the car? Seems very unlikely that you would find 2 lids sprayed the same.Plus the car being only a year old when the owner bought and it being black then.Any info would be great.....

I had a 69 and now have a 68 and neither were black, but one car was white and the other red. I wish I could remember back in high school one of my friends had a 68 hemi GTX in silver. I can't remember his being any different then mine on the red car. But it was a long time ago.

I haven`t seen any other than argent either, but both were sprayed the same way, argent underneath with a light coat of matt black and not completely sprayed to the edges. Both of the panels look alike and are the same shade of black ?

Well, all I can tell you is there's only one part number in the FPM for the finish panel on these and it's for the argent one.
I have two now, neither is exactly "nice" but both are factory argent and have no signs of being refinished.
Pitting, you know...yeesh.

Everyone I've ever seen or had was argent, and there's a low milage silver GTX here in town that's argent. I think it was just something that was done. So many of GM cars had a blacked out back panel as an indicator of a big block that the blacked out tail panel sorta became a warning to not mess with this car, you're gonna lose.

my family has the original (and only Hemi car sold in my home town). a silver 68 X and the back panel is silver.

I guess they were sprayed black but its odd to find 2 panels sprayed the same way years apart.....
