Remove all the clear coat and leave it matte, it think it looks awesome!

That rear axle, it's just a 489 case right? Or does the big "9" tells something different?
I got the same axle under my Coronet, don't know what is in there but i do no it is 4.10 and has a limited slip diff.

The 489 is touted as the strongest of the 3 different 8.75 cases....was usually found behind big blocks in the B and C cars.

As far as removing all the clear....I like the matte look.....but it's not completely uniform...there are some thin spots....and .its really only coming off in the previously "Arizona sun baked" sections...ie flat surfaces. Plus theres a bit of body work to do.

Another quick thought....when I bought this car...I was not dealing directly with the owner...but his soon to be father-in-law.
Now pops had a real nice 55 Chevy in the garage...so he was certainly the influence in the initial purchase of the car for the kid....but from his own mouth...."this kid has no business owning a car like this".....that conclusion was reached within 6 months of ownership.

That really rang true to me a couple weeks ago...when I took it out for that little burn out....the throttle stuck for a second...didnt think much about it till I got home....but.....apparently it had been like this....since I bought it....definatly my fault for not checking.....but he was dailying this car.....Well.....some people's children ..I guess...lol.

There is still enough power in that 318 to waste the mounts.
Good you found it before something would have happened.

Regarding the 489 case, the have the high count spline pinion shaft right?
Mine is a 440 so guess nothing else should be behind that for a axle.

Has to do with the pinion bearing size....I don't think there was a spline change.....you'd loose the ability to interchange the 3...not 100% sure on spline..but 95%

Thx for the link, good info.
I did notice when looking for a ring gear and pinion replacement on docterdiff website that they have a 10 spline and 29 spline...but it states both could be for the 489 case.
Guess just depends what spline you currently have on the drive shaft, either 10 or 29 which should be easily spotted.
Anyway, hopefully in the end of the year i will replace my 4.10 for a 3.23.

At least for you good to know your rear axle will be up to the job if it comes down to that 392 or hell crate engine!!

Guess just depends what spline you currently have on the drive shaft, either 10 or 29 which should be easily spotted.

I live in the Netherlands, shipping wise that is not an option compared to buying something local for you.
Also not sure on the condition of the gearing.
You are more lucky actually, having a new gear set from summit is $265,- from Yukon.

Finding a qualified installer here is an issue...gears generally don't ware poorly unless improperly installed. I'd much rather buy a proven 3rd member that has a few years and miles on it. But that's a personal choice....and greater option here in the states. Junkyard jewels can still be found!

I bought a book for the 8-3/4 rear axles that shows all steps and info regarding rebuilding them.
My plan is to use that as a guideline, aside from the forum here and youtube.
It is not rocket science but you gonna have to be precise with these thing to make it durable.

Notice it says 273-360 LA? I figured it would wake that 69 318 right up.
It was not that price...I got it for 53 bucks...based on the ad alone...a VooDoo for any Chrysler for 53 bucks?....I ordered it before they could change the price...and it came from Amazon directly...not a 3rd party.
It arrived this afternoon....opened the box..and notice the distributor gear on the front....uh oh....so i check Summit real quick...

Well....looks like it's going in my lo po 440 now....and it's actually a pretty good match....can't complain for the price.....And a Voodoo for the price of a Summit...Done and done!

August Update....haven't done much...personal life/health issues....but I did score a pair of Edelbrock RPM heads for my teen...slightly used for less than the cost of one head. Also another Voodoo hydraulic 702 (for a SB this time). The little teen is stronger than I thought...125psi across the board...going to pull heads in a few weeks and hope I see .038....and not alot more. With the RPMs 65cc chamber cut to 63ish and flow around [email protected] Voodoo 702...and Cometic .028 gasket..I'm coming up with 9.75 static...8.6 dynamic. Now I just need to trade that Performer for an RPM or port the hell out of it and add a big spacer...I'm guestimating 340HPish. There may be a torqstorm in her future if the output isnt what I expect. If it is what I expect....hmm...500 street HP....I could dig that for a while.

Well..the weather has sucked, my health hasn't been behaving, and my disability has been sporadic..but...got one header coated..lol. trying to free up the funds to get the heads to the machine shop....prolly be on hold a while longer as I "have to" take an unexpected trip to AZ.

Started pulling the 440 apart...damn...night and day between the out side vs the inside. And as I hoped a double roller t-chain.

Well...the pistons are down .170....and then theres this....

That's one helluva way to mark #1 piston..lol.

so time to pick some pistons. I'm thinking I'll have them blueprint the block and see how much bore it's going to need.theres about .020 bore taper between top and bottom...so hopefully .030 will do it.

Pros and cons if Icon IC968 vs IC9953?

I know the IC968 has the better (read as lighter) weight and thinner ring pack.
Both are forged..and 2.067 CH with the smaller reliefs in the IC968. So I am leaning towards them. I'm not going to zero the block..just a blueprint cut and torque plate hone to keep it all honest. Give the "LY's" some love and ARP fasteners.

Heads are still up in the air but Mike B (B3) has excellent pricing on trick flow 240s.
