Have you thought of going with a overdrive trans like a Tremec? A 470 5spd and 355 or 373s = more smiles per miles. Going to follow this for sure.

I know an overdrive would be the best, but I already had a standard 4-speed that was gone through not long ago, so will use that.

Sweet, another Hunt build! You don't give yourself enough credit, you did a remarkable job on your Charger numbers this and that or not. Some like OEM and some build them to drive em, I like your style myself but can't argue the work put into making one correct either. Looking forward to watching, hopefully my next build at least on this forum will be just a few months behind you.. getting close to starting.

Figured I would get a resto thread going on my car. Just need to forewarn everyone that I am not in the same league as moparnation74, Cranium, dadsbee, and many others on here as far as numbers this and numbers that and exact colors here and there. Not that there is anything wrong with that, in fact I wish I did have the ability to restore stuff like these guys.
Anyway, been looking for a 1969 Bee to restore for about 10 years now. They seem to be a lot harder to find than other models for some reason, I suppose because less were made in the first place. I also had certain options that were important to me, but after so many years of searching, I decided I would probably never find exactly what I wanted. Ran across this car last fall and decided to buy it and build it the way I would have ordered it if I had bought it new. Figured I better get going on one before I get to old and feeble. A friend of a friend had drug it from California to his home south of Indianapolis. He bought it in boxes the same as me about 10 years ago. He started to get the body done by taking it to a shop to get the bodywork done and in primer. He then bought a new house and didn't have enough space for all his cars, so a couple had to go. I talked to him a bunch and got piles of pictures before going to look at it. He is a car guy as far as cosmetics go, but has no idea what it is like to strip a car down to the shell and start from scratch. He was told the car was taken down to bare metal, body work done, and put in primer. So the wife and I hooked up a trailer to make the 11 hour drive south. The car ended up being fairly complete and in halfway decent condition. It was in primer, but I could tell the work that was done on it was not up to my standards. Used that as a bargaining chip to get a bit off the asking price, but still paid to much imo. That's the way it goes with these things though, but I finally had a 69 Bee. First pic of when we saw it in Indiana for the first time, and then back in my garage. So I hope I don't offend anyone (because there will be modifications made to the car), but here we go!

Been talking to Brian at IMM Engines out in California and that is the head he really likes and wants to use if he does the build for me. Had him build the 408 in my Duster and have to say that I couldn't be happier with him. Does what he says, when he says, and for the price he says. And the motor just rocks.
He says that he hasn't built a 451 or 470 for a couple of years because everybody reads the magazines and wants at least a 500" motor. I am only looking for 550hp and 550 torque, so either of the smaller strokes will work just fine for me.

I'll try to get this build up to date although I didn't take a lot of pics along the way. Noticed in the very first post that I accidently posted a couple of pics with a bunch of suspension parts already painted up and sitting on my trailer. That is definitely not how they came lol.
First thing I did before ripping anything apart was to make sure all gaps were nice and the torsion bars were adjusted evenly. With the weight of the car on the wheels I tacked in US Car Tool torque boxes and my homemade frame connectors. I use 1.5 x 2.5 x .125 tubing cut at an angle on the rear and then wrapped with a bent u-channel 2.5 x 3. The torque boxes are nice, but still take a bit of modifications to get them to fit nice. I will weld all this up once the car is on a rotisserie.

Next spent about 2 weeks of evenings getting all the undercoating off. Needle scaler on the thick stuff and torch and scrapers where it was applied thinner. Thankfully, no issues were hiding under all the undercoating that I didn't already know about.

That's a lot of arm work, you probably look like Popeye after that!
