Need some help here. I have a factory 1970 440 HP2 4 barrel carb intake #2951736. I have not been able to come up with the correct Carter AVS 4737S carb for it yet so I am putting a rebuilt Carter AVS 4617S on there for now. The 4617S is a 1969 and the 4737S is a 1970 but both for 440 4 speed applications. There must be a supportive spacer plate between the carb and the manifold as there is no "flush" clearance for the intake heat diaphragm unless the carb is lifted up at least 1/2" to clear the carb base and linkages. There is also not a flat continuous surface on the intake for the carb to sit down on which further leads me to believe there must have been a factory support spacer plate that I am missing. This is relative to restoration of a full numbers matching 1970 Superbird Roadrunner 440 4V 4 Speed Dana 3:54 car. If anyone can share some wisdom, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

This is the intake for better understanding. As you can see there is not a flat plate surface for mounting the carb and the choke heat unit also lacks clearance from the carbs base and linkages. That is why I am assuming there must have been a factory spacer plate. Thanks.....any help much appreciated.

M383 came with a Holley 4160 and did not use a spacer. Do not know about the carters

try heat insulator fiber gaskets. they can be stacked if needed.

I just picked up a 1" Mr. Gasket pot metal / aluminum spacer as well as a set of one thick 1/4" fiber gasket along with 3 aluminum heat dispenser plates that are about 1/16" thick each. I'm going to try the shortest possible arrangement to clear the choke heat assembly and bridge the gap between the secondary ports and the intake bolt hole. If anyone knows the factory set up please let me know. Thanks.

Maybe a dumb question, but is that the correct choke actuator? I recall the inner edge, closest to carb being straight. I Sure could be wrong.

Does the spacer you got fit past the choke stat?

The well opening in the intake for the choke actuator is curved exactly like the inner flange on the choke actuator. I actually have the original pot with gasket and bolts that go down into the intake below the actuator. The only possibility is that the actuator is too tall vertically as the perimeter fit matches the original well pot perfectly. I did notice that the arm from the actuator doesn't line up vertically with the hook up point on the carb unless you raise the carb up 1/2". Thx

Thank you very much. The numbers on that intake go to a 1970 440....it was "born with" on my Superbird's matching numbers engine. That flat top might do it.
