70 Roadrunner horn trouble

Your horn ground wire must have shorted out inside the steering column.
You need to run a new wire for the horn through the column, or better yet remove the harness from the column and and look it over carefully and repair or replace as needed.

I removed the harness & found no noticible problem. No bare wires or anything visible. I have a new harness coming. On the turn signal mechanism ther is a plunger & roller set up. Is this for the horn, it has the black wire attached to it. If it is can i ground it at the harnes connector to check & see if the horn will work ???

Yes, the roller contact rides the slip ring on the underside of the wheel. Ground it, the horn should blow. If it does the problem is related to the wheel or the slip ring is shorted.

Thank you all very much for the help. My new signal wiring harness will be here today. I'm going to clean the horn switch & put the new harness in tonite & hope everything works !!!

I can't figure this thing out. I put the new harness in tonite. Testing the horn as I progressed. First I grounded at the wiring connector under the dash, perfect. Next after I ran the harness thru the column at the roller assembly, perfect again. Put the steering wheel on & tightened it down and now the horn blows. What's wrong here????

If it's possible to talk to anyone please let know. I'll call you !!!

Chuck, you're thinking too hard here.

As already posted, you've proven the problem is above the steering column harness connector obviously.
We've shown you the contacts and the wiring diagram.
We're talking about one wire now, the one that goes up inside the column and goes to the contacts 440+6 has shown you.
Either the wire is grounding inside the column somewhere or the contacts are touching.
Really is that simple.

Can be the ring on the back of the steering wheel grounding out, years back I had this problem that the gasket between the steering wheel and the ring that the roller touches was shot, removed the ring and made a gasket and everything worked. With mine the problem was every bump in the road the horn would chirp.

Well, I found some cracks in the steering wheel itself. It is split in multiple places. The breaks are around the hub area. So I think i'll try & find another wheel.

Anybody have one for sale ????

Chuck

Might want to post something in the "WTB" section.

Well, I had to find a steering wheel. Got a new one today & it works perfectly. Apparently the wheel was cracked & broken on the inside. Thanks everyone for the help & valuable knowledge you have.
