71 Charger....moving on to radio

front is 4x10 ( available around BUT speaker basket could be diff )
rear left is 5x8 ( availabe around BUT screws locations are diff BTDT, got a NOS one long time ago just because that )
rear right is 9x6 ( any commercial brand will fit correctly there )

Ended up going with the dual front speaker arrangement. Now I am trying to see if anyone is aware of a "matching" pair of speakers that will fit the 2 different speaker openings in the rear package tray.

i litterly hate seeing the rallye dashes cut for stereo's .I have taken a am radio and took all the guts out of it .I am in the process of either mounting a cd changer and put the controller in the radio .With all my Deep purple music and Skynrd as well i do not want to hack a dash or a glove box .whatabout mounting the faceplate in the sunvisor run the wires down the Apillar and put the deck up under the dash tucked away neatly ...DON'T CUT THAT DASH......

The reason why the rear holes are different sizes is that only 1 of them is a speaker hole. The other is the intake for a rear window defroster if so equipted. The hole will be there weather or not it had the defroster. I used a new package tray with the cutouts made by REM and what a piece of crap that is. The retainer plates for the clips and not there. And the cuts were all fuzzy and looked like fidow's butt. I got a couple three packs of woden fingernail files and filed each smooth. Then I had to lay it face down on an old sheet and weight around the holes with a brick on each side of each cut out, so when I sprayed it the paint would only be in the slots and none would seep out on to the topside. Shot away with some black and they rook faboulous.
Yes it's a lot of work but it is at least as good as new and probably better. Remember that some of your metal panel may show through around the edges (rectangular slot pattern over oval hole) so slap n a littlee black aroune the speaker hole. And you may want to add an extea speaker spacer and mount from the bottom, because most speakers come with raised covers and the centers may be a little higher than the frame.
The guy with the 2 into one front mounting plate is also a member here also and I think he had them on special last week in FABO.
Best of luck to ya

actually, I think there is a deeper reason why the diff holes on the rear tray... if that was the reason they could made both speakers holes 6x9 or 5x8, and there wasn't dual speaker option anyway, or there wasn't a reason why make the blower hole on the same 6x9 speaker pattern. If you note the bower assembly, it FITS on the 5x8 hole the same, with the propper bracket made for the size

I'd say the reason is more "acoustic". You get left channel on front 4x10. When single rear speaker, the right channel is 5x8... both cone surfaces are MORE LESS THE SAME, able to reproduce lower frequencies.

when getting dual speaker, you get both left channels on the 4x10 and 5x8, and ONLY the right channel on the 6x9. More cone surface

there is a norm on audio, than 2 speakers are more less same efficiency than one 1.4 times bigger. So 2 10" speakers are more less the same than 1 14" speaker ( if they exist ).

Of course the 6x9 speaker is not exact to the 1.4 rule, but better than nothing, is what market offers
