Looking for advice on installing the front bumper after new body and paint work. These bumpers have a lot of brackets and attachment points and if assembled to the frame brackets become heavy and awkward.

This might help.

I have a 72 so the same bumper. My advice from experience:
  1. Get a friend to help you in the final install of the main bumper.
  2. Get some pool noodles to protect your paint.
  3. Loosely install the main and the outer brackets (pinched but not tight) to front of the car, (you can reach the bumper nuts from the front wheel well)
  4. The inner bracket must be installed on the bumper. Tighten to the bumper. You won't be able to get to it once installed.
  5. I cut the pool noodle in half and pieces and placed them on the fenders.
  6. Now for your friend, the inner bracket will guide on the main bracket as your team slides the bumper into near place.
  7. Install the bolts holding the inner bracket to the main bracket.
  8. Add your chrome bolts to the main and outer bracket.
  9. Adjust slowly to get your fit. Each side took me a couple of tries to get right.
  10. Cut away the pool noodle pieces.
  11. Enjoy a cold beverage and admire your work.

artr8 did you install the 6 grill brackets before or after installing the bumper and how is the access to the 2 short braces at each corner?
