What is the design fluid level of a 727 trans,in neutral, warmed up,motor running. Relative to the case. Like,1 inch above the pan rail? How can you tell if your aerating the fluid by over filling. In a warm trans,I'd imagine air bubbles would clear out of the fluid pretty fast unless it was way overfilled. My hughes locking dipstick says about 1 quart over. Thats at 17 pints plus what the 8 inch convertor holds after sitting. 2 pints? 19 total. The pan holds 2 quarts extra. My 69 chrysler and imperial factory service manual says 15 1/2 to 18 1/2 pints total fill. With all the varibles I would like to know the bottom line. Thanks.

No. 2+2 stuff. Think about it...if you had the fill tube, and stick out, and in your hand, with the stick in the tube...fill mark would be 'below' the end of the tube. That means fluid high mark is under the pan rail...by a little.
End of the fill tube should be just past the case hole thickness it goes into, so fluid mark pretty much fills the pan itself, but not up to the pan gasket.
Even with a bigger pan, main thing is keeping the pick-up in the fluid. Haven't experianced it, but have always been told over-filling, can blow out the seals.

I will add, though, what I'm talking about is as the trans is 'operating', not sitting still!

At rest the converter drains. The level will be well above the pan rail. Set it between add and full after a hard
Run hot.

An extra pint seems to make a difference.
Later upshifts, harder shifts and seems like more torque.
Just my observations since 1977.
