I have a TCI built 727 reverse shift manual VB.
I just installed the motor, and trans this past week. I bought the trans from TCI almost a year ago and their warranty is only good for 30 days from date of purchase. So I am sure I will be SOL when I call them tomorrow for help.

After driving the car for a few miles I had noticed that the 2-3 shift was very very harsh, Great that means its slamming gears fast... not really... After a few more miles on it, the 2-3 shift is now like it would be if I jammed hard on the breaks (under moderate load). Under hard acceleration its not doing that. It just jumps right to the 3rd gear. I am about to get off of work and am heading over to my Dad's to try to adjust the front band, as per most spcs its 72 inch-pounds back it out a full complete 2 turns them tighten the hold down nut.

I will let you guys know if that changed any thing tomorrow, in the mean time give me some ideas please

If TCI did the whole thing, give them a call first.

I called TCI, they told me to adjust the front band. Since I cant find my TQ wrench, I will buy a inch pound tq wrench on my lunch break. As per TCI "If that does not solve the problem, then I will have to pull and ship the trans back to TCI as there is no other adjustments that could change the shift issue".

Trying to remember- a normal(4-5”) 5/16” wrench pulled down(normal muscles) will almost equal the inch-pounds. At least they’re talking to ya after a year.

Yep. And there isn't any spring, once it's tight it's tight. Snug it down, then back off the 2 turns.

Some Manual valve bodies use full line pressure, no throttle pressure control linkage. Chirping the tires is easy on 1/2 shift, 2/3 will give you a pretty good jerk. Just took one out of my car.

A loose band won't cause this issue. Possiby too tight; but I doubt it. How does it feel under full throttle? A little 2/3 overlap won't hurt. It can be reduced several ways if necesary. A tight converter really amplifies the effect. What converter?

A and A sells a package that minimizes some of the light throttle 2-3 overlap.

If there's a 2/3 light throttle buck (called shift overlap... 3rd is coming on before 2nd can come off), you need to either lower the line pressure, or restrict the high gear clutch apply circuit. If it's good at WOT, chances are the pressure can be dropped a hair and it will be fine.

I called TCI, They are working with me on warranty work even though its been sitting for almost a year. After explaining the problem, and what I did to adjust the front band. The tech guy said that there may be an issue with the sprag, or some other sort of internal issue. I have to go pull the trans and ship it back to them. They set me up with a bill of lading and will ship out on the 4th... If I get it pulled in time...

Sprag doesn't have anything to do with the 2/3 shift either.

I didn't think the sprag had any thing to do with 2-3 shift, however that is what Dennis Campbell from TCI warranty department said. I am not about to argue as they are willing to work with me on getting it fixed under warranty, even though I bought the trans in February and their 30 day warranty has expired. The only saving grace is when I installed the trans, My engine ate a cam lobe, and my engine spent 6 months at the machine shop. I was not able to use the trans that whole time I have had it. Now that I got every thing back and installed, I finally was able to drive my car for the first time in years, that is when the trans issue showed up.

After tons of research on the webs, more than likely my trans needs some sort of orifice mod to reduce the pressure or flow on that shift circlet. It has been very well documented problem with full manual **** valvebodys.

They wanted me to make sure the band was not to tight . Under WOT the shift was not as harsh but still very noticeable, a good solid jerk (Not in the good way a race trans should) . At part throttle the whole *** end of the car jerks down just like some one stabbed the brakes really hard.
The converter I am using is a Hughes 24-30HD. it was also new on the installation of the transmission.

God bless ya! Good luck.

If they want it back - send it back. Can't hurt IMO. Probably a simple fix, but let them fix it so they can stand behind it.

Had the same problem. With the car on jack stands I could see the tires stop completely on the 2-3 shift. Adjusting the rear band helped tremendously.

The rear band is applied in 1st and reverse only. Has nothing to do with the 2/3 shift. On the 2/3 shift the intermediate (kick down /forward) band releases. The forward (high/reverse) clutch applys. If the clutch applys before the band is released there will be overlap. It's that simple. Either speed the band release or slow the clutch.
