727 push button auto cable leak

Have a trans leak on 65 727 cable shift.
It is leaking from where the park cable goes into the transmission. ( Someone has put some kind of tape over it in the past, as you can see from photos).
I have read of a few fixes on here. But have a few questions.
Is there anything tricky in removing and re installing the cable?
Looking at pics the fluid seems to be coming from the sleeving, but also from the bolt in the pic( looks like it has some kind of blue sealer).
I assume the park cable had an o ring. Would I need to replace this or should I try the heat shrink over the sleeving as first option?
Will I have to drain the trans first, will fluid gush out of there or will it leak out at a rate that won't lose too much fluid( and not cover me in fluid)
How far along do you put the heat shrink( do you but it up to the housing)?

This can be a problem area for leaks. Many different paths. Clean and dry the area and puff some baby powder up around the housing and tail shaft. See where it gets damp. The cable itself can be removed by removing the lower allen plug. Loosen the clamp nut and pry the stud loose. There is a spring wire that sets in a slot of the cable connector. Using a pic push the wire outward and pull on the cable. Leaks areas; the cable housing O-ring, The cable itself at the crimp. The cable can be sleeved with marine heat shrink tube. The hosing gasket. Many of these housings are warped and need to be stoned flat. The rear band pivot bolt washer. The tailshaft gasket. It is also possible that any leak above the pan rail (or the pan itself) can drip back down around this area depending on the angle of the car(low in the rear). To be honest I've chased a very small drip from this area in my racecar. Tried every fix mentioned. It still drips just slightly.

As far as removing/reinstalling, you loosen the bolt going across the cable you can see in your pic and tap it back a little (Do not lose that bolt you will hate life), then take the pipe plug out of the bottom of the cover, some fluid will come out but not much.. less than a cup. The end of the cable goes into a receiver and is held by a spring, you push up on the spring and the cable will pull out. I would put a new o-ring on.. i have heard of people epoxying or heat shrinking where the cable end meets the outer cable cover.. but no help there, got lucky and mine doesn't leak.. I also use RTV on the cable when when i put it back in.. so it's hopefully better than just the o-ring...

Here is a thread showing what it all looks like so you have a better idea...
 
Couple of other quick things, don't try to remove the cover with the cable still attached, people do that and it will make problems... On mine the spring the little end of the cable goes through wasn't holding when i put back together, i had to bend the spring a tiny bit so it held better. Now i check that before i put it together, takes 30 seconds and is easier than taking it back apart to fix that. (Just mentioning in case it happens to you)

I have the same leak. On mine, the park cable came out of the holder on the floor pan and got on the exhaust which burned the sheathing around the cable. It runs down the cable at the burn and leaks where yours does. I am going to remove it and try putting heat shrink around it. Waiting for good weather, I'll let you know.
 
My 65 Sport Fury leaked at the same place many years ago and when I dropped the pan to change the filter and fluid, I cleaned the cable connector with brake cleaner and smeared on some JB weld or two part Epoxy glue around it. (don't remember for sure)
That was back in the late 1980's. Hasn't leaked since.
