Hopefully in posting in the correct place. My uncles 73 Charger's clock has not worked for as long as I've been alive, and now that it's mine I want to get it functional if possible.

The question is what could be wrong with it? Is there something internal to the clock that would make it go bad or is it more likely to be just a bad wire or something like that? What are my options to fix it and would I need to send it to some kind of specialist or is it pretty straight forward?

Thanks!

If it's anything like the '70 cars...the clock probably ran for about 5 minutes after the car was driven off the dealer's lot as new.
Best thing you can do is remove the clock and have a quartz movement installed - it will keep correct time, and work for years ....not minutes. :icon_thumright:

They are a electromechanical combo. Couple of points ( powered by couple of coils ) which suppports the winding springs system. When points close they make a short winding out the springs to make the mechanical system work. They are winded by a minute or so, untill the points gets closed again and wind again.

USUALLY you can get two fails and both related to points failure. They can stick untill blow the wire coming from coil OR even melt the solenoid coils if the coil wire holds the short.

Just one thing for sure... need to remove and check it.

NOTE, if is STANDARD cluster, the clock source comes from fuse block, so you can get the fuse blown. If Rallye cluster the source comes straight from ammeter stud, so no fuse protection.

This information might help you since I have a similar issue with my 74 Dodge Charger SE with Rallye cluster. I contacted Instrument Services, Inc. at http://www.clocksandgauges.com/index.html. I will say I have not done this yet so don't have any opinion on their product or work. The information they supplied is as follows.

The quartz conversion kit #I-3035 will work in your clock if you have a Borg manufactured clock. The price is $65.00 plus $14.00 for shipping and handling(within the US). This includes the quartz movement, a small packet of parts, and written instructions. There is an optional DVD available for $5.00.

The price for us to convert your clock to quartz is $110.00 (Borg manufactured clock) or $120.00 (General Time/Westclox manfuactured clock) plus shipping and handling. This price includes us installing the quartz movement, cleaning up the case, buffing the lens, polishing the bezel and repainting the hands. The line time is approximately 2 weeks.

If you have it fixed and do not go quartz disconnect the the battery when the vehicle is not in use as low battery voltage will take the clock out every time. I have had mine repaired once and will go quartz the next time.

It's a standard gauge cluster, not rallye. I'll have to look more into gettin something done. Alway bugged me and now I have a reason to fix it!

How could I find for sure if my clock was s Borg?
