73 Roadrunner 340 Auto

Wow, last post was July 29. That Covid crap took me out for over a month but I survived. Did lose my father-in-law and one of my sister-in-laws. The month of August was really tough on our family. Nasty **** is all I can say. Spent 6 days in the hospital just trying to breath and I am a pretty healthy guy. Headed back to work tomorrow so I figured I could work on the car a little. Finished the initial body work on the trunk lid and got it into epoxy. Will put high build on it tomorrow if all goes well.

Sorry to hear this. Wow, to lose two members of the family to Covid is terrible. I am glad you pulled through and I hope you make a full recovery with no lasting aftereffects.

Truly sorry for your losses.
Have been watching your progress and am very impressed! Can’t imagine not having some kind of project to do! Bout done with my 73 sunroof Charger I’ve owned for 40 years, getting excited! Keep up the good work! And oh, next time buy a southern or southwestern car! Lol!

Every day gets a little closer. Working the later shift for the next two weeks so I only get a few hours to work on the car. If I can knock out one little project each night (like a door, or underside of the hood, etc) I would feel pretty good.
For now just a little high build on the trunk feels like a win.

Progress is progress. Little or big, each step counts.

Close as from the factory as my budget will allow. It is actually one of two RR's I am restoring. Both are numbers matching. The other is also a 73 340 but is a 4 speed. Both will be sold once they are done. Just like the kid with a red paper clip, I am going to work/trade/sell my way up to my dream car, a Superbird. A 72 challenger 340 and a 1966 383 4 speed Charger follow the RR's in the resto lineup. They are just sitting in storage waiting their turn. 4 cars for one, should be able to pull it off. LOL

Taking the underside of the hood down the bare metal is taking a little longer than I thought. Just about done! Then there are just the door edges to do. I figure a week or so from now I can start spraying some color.

A week to finish the hood! I was off a little as it took 11 days. I finished taking it to bare metal where I could, treated any rust where I could not reach, sprayed with epoxy, and then two coats of high build. I will set this aside (somewhere) and get the doors up for their work. Not too much as the outsides are already in epoxy. Shouldn't take more than a week LOL.

It has been awhile since I saw your post, you have put in a ton of work there, looking great, my hats off to you.

Thanks Sparky, I hope to be done by the end of the year, but work is not being my friend lately.

What kind of epoxy and what kind of primer do you use?

What kind of epoxy and what kind of primer do you use?

73PlyRR,
I always use PPG's Shop-line series. Epoxy Primer (Black) is JP377 with JH3770 hardner
2K Primer Surfacer (aka high build primer) is JP202 with JH301

JP377 is sort of old school as it has a 15 minute induction period but I really like the product so I don't mind. Gives me time to clean the gun and change tips, etc.

Driver door down to bare metal. I was trying to figure out a way to leave the hinges on so I didn't have to drill holes
to mark their exact location for re-install. I did a witness spray in black just before pulling them for cleaning. Once clean I put the hinges back on in their original positions using the witness marks to get them exact. Now I will have to drill them (what I should have done right from the beginning) before removing them again to get under the hinge plates. No big deal, the hinges are better sprayed when they are off the door anyway. For a car that is almost 48 years old, the doors are in great shape! No rust repair on either door.

Driver door in epoxy and then high build.

Flip this puppy over, check it for damage as it was done awhile ago, and that is it. All the major parts are in high build primer waiting to be blocked.

No damage from being stored so the high build went on.

That is it, all the major body parts are in high build primer and ready to sand. Only took 11 months to get this far. Too much time at work and not enough time on the car. Time to clean the garage of the extra panels and start the final sand on the main body. Once the body is done, I can roll it out of the garage which will give me much more room to finish everything else. Figure I will do the interior and the inside of the trunk in enamel and the rest of the car in BC/CC.
