74 charger U code + E86 440

Hi guys, just bought a 1974 Charger (WP29), I knew it was a numbers matching u code 440 car (U4A) on fender tag, 275 hp but to my surprise it also has E86 on the tag which decodes to the HP 375 hp 440. I did not know there were 2 different 440 options in 74, Anyone know more about this?

E86 is the fender tag code for the 440-4bbl HP over several model years. Horse power ratings changed from year to year, downward trending over time. Nothing close to 375HP offered in ’74, the 275HP is correct for that year.

U4A is part of the VIN, U = 440 275HP(net) 1-4BBL 8 CYL, 4 = 1974, A = Lynch Road, MI, USA

So they had 2 engine codes on the fender tag? Why the E86 and U4A?

Again, U4A is not a fender tag code, it is part of the VIN, all tags included the full VIN.
