below is the 8 3/4 article with info about the rear--

The 8-3/4" axle was available in three basic types. The types are differentiated by the pinion stem diameter....1-3/8", 1-3/4", 1-7/8". The choice of axle pinion assembly was determined based on the application. Differential bearing setting (ie. backlash ) is set with threaded adjusters on all carriers. All 8-3/4" carrier assemblies can be identified externally by the casting numbers.
1-3/8" small stem pinion (aka. '741')
Carrier casting numbers: 1820657 (1957-1964), 2070741 (1964-1972).
This assembly was typically used in low weight/low horsepower applications through low weight/medium horsepower and high weight/low horsepower applications.

for auction a 8 3/4 carrier with a 3.54 gear. this unit ia NOT A POSI. this unit is in good condition considering its age. the case number 1820657 is the first generation 8 3/4. it came out in the trucks in 1957 and the cars in 1958. it was used through 1964. the bearings feel good and the play between the gears feels fine also. the gear does has a few places that have some very light rust from sitting. see photos 4,5,6,7. the spider gears also look good with no broken or chipped teeth. i would suggest a new pinion seal. it looked like it had been leaking a little. the yoke on this unit is the larger 2 5/8.

the gear ratio on this unit is (11:39) 3.545. it is odd the ring gear says 3.54 but rounding the number would be 3.55 which is what it was advertised to be. see the 12th photo. it really does not mean anything but i fould it odd and thought you should know. also i think the date on the gear is 1-7-59

this unit turns very freely and feels smooth. i am supprised that this thing is over 50 years old!!! this unit would be perfect for the original restoration of a early chrysler, plymouth or dodge. it will fit in the later models also. the case number would indicate it was for a early model. but if you need lower gears for your muscle car, it will work fine.
