Hi,

Can anyone tell me what I can expect to pay for parts and labor to rebuild my 8 3/4 Sure Grip and replace the axle bearings. The gears are fine on the 8 3/4 but the bearings are toast, as are the axle bearings. I plan on taking the chuck and axles out and bringing them to a shop to rebuild. Want to make sure I don't get shot a ridiculous price.

Thanks for the help!

I would guess 6-8 hours labor plus parts. Look up parts on Rock Auto and double their price.

Just a thought here...what shop would you be taking it to? A local Speed Shop? A Dealership? Mom and Pop Shop? Honestly the price really will depend on things like are they experienced in doing this work, do they have they tools, hourly rate, etc. Sometimes the best route really is to buy a complete chunk the way you want it. Like what Dr. Diff., Moser, etc. offers. As far as the axles go, a regular machine shop can do the replacement of the bearings, so no big deal. My opinion would be the best bang for your buck is gonna be new stuff built and guaranteed by a reputable company. It's a different deal if you can do this stuff yourself.

Maybe get a quote or two and post here to get feed back to see if it sounds reasonable? I had my differential done by my engine builder and did the axle bearings myself. Cut the old stuff off and use a shop press to put the new on.

ill give you a data point and you can use it or not. im in South Texas, someone didnt know what they were doing on the previous owners build, blew the rear end in my Charger. destroyed the ring and pinion, so everything got rebuilt. The sure-grip was fine and didnt need to be replaced.

new pinion, ring gear, u-joint, seals and bearings came to a little over $3k by the classic car shop that only really works on muscle cars and classics.

good luck in your endeavor.

THREE GRAND??? About three years ago I Purchased a completely rebuilt sure grip for $900. Buy axle beaning and seals, put them in yourself, easy peasy. Or take the axles to a shop to have the bearings pressed on. Total cost under $1500 and I can still sell the open .323 to recoup some cash!

you bought just the sure grip? or you bought the suregrip with ring and pinion, seals etc completely setup in a 3rd member and you just bolted that up?

I had my sure grip rebuilt early this year by a reputable drivetrain shop local to me. They rebuilt my center section (including my sure grip unit) and added a set of gears. if I recall the total bill was around 1500 or 1600. I found a couple sources for a similar build on ebay and a few used units similarly priced. The reviews on ebay and the unknowns of used led me to having my stuff rebuilt. I did the tapered roller axle bearings myself.

here's why everything needed to get redone
