I have a 1970 Satellite project. It's NOT a Sport Satellite, just a base model - but it DID come with a 383 (non-HP, I suspect), 727 transmission, and an 8 3/4 rear end with 2.76 gears.

My question - is there any way to tell if this is a Sure-Grip rear end without removing and opening it up?

Thanks!

Lift the rear, hand spin the tires...same direction, sure grip. Opposite direction, open carrier.

Note: If the Sure-Grip is 'very tired' the tires can rotate in opposite directions giving one the impression its an open carrier.

If it has characteristics of a Sure-Grip (wheels going in the same direction) look for a round tag secured under one of the nuts holding the 3rd member in the housing. If it was a factory install, it should be there and it should have 'Sure Grip' stamped into it.

Found what I thought was a SureGrip in a wrecking yard. The car was up off the ground and didn't look bad and after giving one wheel a spin and the other going in the same direction and had plenty of resistance, I was confident it was a good unit so it got pulled. It was a rusted up open rear lol
