I ordered a set of arp 240-3001 3/8-24 LHT ring gear bolts. I believe it’s a 67 center section. The some shank directly under the bolt head is larger in diameter than the holes in the sure grip half. I see no other bolt in arp catalog. Does any manufacturer make the correct bolt?

Not sure from the angle of your picture - but the ARP bolts are designed to be used with a heavy chamfer at the top of the hole. This can easily be done with a countersink tool.
Is it the right thread?
If it is you can make it work.

It's been a while, but I thought I had some chamfered hardened washers in my ARP ring bolt application.

ARP says its a .390 grip. So there must be another size that they do not make.

4/16/02 directly from ARP:
Chrysler Ring bolts #P7AJ-835-1LH
3/8 x.635 OD Chamfer washers #AJW625S

According to something Dr Diff wrote years ago, 68 and earlier 8 3/4" carriers had smaller holes than 69 up.
That may certainly be true, but I never remember it ever being a topic mentioned regarding interchangeability by years, which is hard to understand.

Aparrently all after market sure grips, spools etc. use the larger bolts, and at the time Dr diff wrote that, there were no suppliers of the early small bolts. The threads were the same, but the shanks were different.

Story of my life. So I ordered a set of bolts from a different manufacturer, see if they work. If not I’ll go visit a machinist to see if they can perfectly machine the housing to accept the bolts that are available.

Well thanks for sharing, I learned something.

Before you get stupid, I'll go measure the one's that I pulled out of the '64 taper, tomorrow, and see what diameter they are. I scraped the housing and pumpkin / spool. I kept the gears and hardware...

earlier Chrysler carrier units both open and sure grip used a 0.370 shoulder on the ring gear bolts ,, later units starting about 1969 had a 0.380 shoulder on the ring gear bolts which would not allow them to be used on the earlier units ,, all you have to do is simply open your ring gear bolt holes up to 0.390 with the right size drill bit and you will be good to go. just secure the carrier properly and drill thru. as stated all the after market sure grip units use the 0.380 shoulder bolts. Ratech Manufacturing who make and sell kits to rebuild differentials includes a note in their 8-3/4 kits to open up the holes in the earlier carriers so the bolts in the kit will work.

25/64 Drill and a drill press. Just be careful and set it up so the drill is square to the ring surface and the work is blocked so it can’t spin if the drill grabs.

You will have to chamfer the head side to clear the bolt radius and the gear side a little to get rid of the burrs.
