When I was parking my '68 Satellite the other day, my mental age suddenly dropped and I floored it... was a bit curious to see if I'd leave any rubber on the garage floor. To my amazement, I saw two tire marks in the garage floor instead of the expected one! So my rear turned out to be a locking one, something I hadn't expected, my car being a basic 318/A904.

So - does this mean my rear is a SureGrip? Should I be able to see that on the fender tag? I guess the casting numbers on the axle housing would indicate that, but haven't been able to see any markings yet.

There are no casting numbers on the center section that indicate that the rearend is a suregrip. The center sections are easy to swap out and this is most likely what has taken place in your car. The casting number on your center section should end in 741 or possibly 742. If it ends in 489 it definitely was swapped out at some point.

I hope this helps,
Joe

Lift the rear up, hand spin the tires. If they go the same direction, sure grip. Opposite directions, open carrier. I have had many cars bark both tires with an open carrier, for a second on a slippery surface.

It 'might' have a circular tab (like an over-sized washer) under one of the nuts holding the 3rd member in the rear end. It may be stamped 'sure-grip'. There should also be a retangular tab on another stud with numbers on it, i.e.: 3.23, 2.94, etc. That displays the gear ratio. But as Petty Blue states, if someone has been inside there and 'changed things', then you may not find either tag. on it.

Thanks guys - I'll check it out.

Well, crawled under the car and found the gear ratio tag, no SureGrip tag though. Didn't really expert one though. Center section says 2070714 and 24.

If both tires get equal traction both will spin. Sure grip or not.

And... what if opposite tire doesn't move at all when I spin the other?
