I want to replace the bearings, seals, and possibly the synchros while I have my motor out. I have heard that there are some poor quality parts out there for doing this. Any recommendations for a vendor source?

Brewer Performance or Passon Performance.

Passon Performance offers complete transmissions or parts of the transmissions, including bearings, seals, synchronizers and if needed new gears snd shafts, manufactured out of better, higher strength alloy than Chrysler used, an aluminum case if desired....a great source, but not inexpensive....they're located in Pennsylvania.

I bought a rebuild kit and a primary shaft from Brewer. So far, so good. Good customer service. Best, B.

Thank you. I am willing to spend more if it's better quality. I know of someone who had a trans rebuilt and the parts did not last. I can't get these transmissions out as easily anymore and I don't want to do it again. I am toying with an over drive unit. My friend had one in his hemi Charger and it was rated 2,000 hp? Had the best of both worlds driving around with a 4.10 dana. I really don't like driving long periods at 3,500 to 4,000 to car shows if I can help it.

Out of curiosity, your acquaintance, who rebuilt his transmission and which specific parts failed or "did not last"? I'll make sure not to use this person. Perhaps he was not aware that the rebuilder should have an assortment of selective fit snap rings and shims to get the correct spacing between parts....every trans usually requires different snap rings and shims, particularly when replacing synchronizers......
Yes...going down the highway at 3500 RPM is a PITA.....i've got 4.10 gears in the Dana 60 in my RS23V0A GTX....great for red light contests not the interstate.

That must be a Gear Vendors unit. The good: they make units that fit on the back of either A-833 4 speed or 727 transmissions. Also, they really don't require transmission modifications except for maybe a tap with a hammer. They do require a shortened driveshaft. The bad: they are only .8 ratio on the overdrive. But they are bullet proof and you can "split" every gear. In theory, it makes an A-833 an 8 speed (although you will likely never use all).

Passon Performance also sells Hemi 4 speed overdrives. They are A-833 4 speeds where 3rd gear gets converted to an overdrive. So it is like 3 speed + overdrive. Very stout and strong.

None of the really good options are cheap, but in my opinion, they are worth it to enjoy the car on longer trips.

Re the Passion performance over drive conversion ...... the 0.8 over drive with a 4.10 ratio rear gear = 3.28 final ratio. Not bad.....but remembering to shift 1 - 2 - 4 - 3 in the heat of battle or an intense competition may be difficult..... at least one time.... Old dogs like me are difficult to teach new tricks to....

I've seldom taken 833 's apart with bad bearings. Most of the time the clutching teeth, slider hubs, brass, and occasionally forks are worn. The hubs can be filled and deburred. After this mod they actually shift really well. The clutching teeth can be repointed with a Dremel cut off wheel is there is enough material left. Just replacing bearings and brass may lead to disappointing shift quality.

Bob, as you state, the overdrive units make 3rd gear the overdrive, so you are using 1 - 2 - 4 - 3 as you state. However, you don't need to remember anything. You simply flip the shift lever on the transmission and that makes the shift pattern in the car totally normal. Your right arm doesn't need to remember a thing!!!

You might try Liberty's Gears out of the Detroit area as well. They do not advertise 833 work, but I have sourced part's and expertise from them in the past. At one time their brass and bearings were better than what Mopar Performance sold. (dating myself)

For the last 5 years I have run a 23 spline O/D A-833 - I used it when I drove across country. The gear ratios for that unit are 3.09, 1.67, 1:1, .73. The first gear on this unit is really not right for a big block, but it works OK. However, when I temporarily put my original non O/D 4 speed back, I couldn't stand driving the car on the highway - it felt like a buzz saw so I put the O/D right back in!

The Passon Hemi 18 spline O/D gear ratios are: 2.66, 1.59, 1:1, .80. This makes for a much nicer gear spread, and it can take much more torque.

I realize that if you compare extra gas costs without O/D vs. the price of the O/D transmission, you will likely never save enough money with the O/D to justify the cost. However, the O/D makes me enjoy driving my car so much more that in my opinion it is worth every penny.

Good luck,

Hawk

THANK YOU FOR YOUR INSIGHT and your experience. MPG is not a real factor for me as my annual milage is 500 or less....its just the high RPMs at cruise speeds and the wear and tear on the engine. I've got to pay my taxes and then see how much is left to fund the transmission purchase. Your remarks sre quite compelling.

Glad they were helpful - that's what the forum is for! Feel free to PM me if you want more information or details. I am just now installing a Passon 4 speed A-855 in my car, but I have no feedback on that yet. Hopefully will be able to drive my car in the next month or so and I can report back. It is the best of both worlds, with A-833 gearing (or very close) for gears 1-4, plus a .7 O/D. I have high hopes for it!
