Gentleman, I'm at my wits end with my transmission and I humbly ask for assistance. Car is a '73 Satellite, 318 / 904 column shift.
There are two problems: first, reverse is a little wonky, feels like it slips but it does catch eventually with increased throttle. Seems to get worse once the trans is warm, but it still works. Second, when the trans shifts into third, it neutrals out, meaning that it no longer pulls. It does shift into third, since I can pull it back down to manual 2nd and it definitely downshifts.
The good: it shifts fine (if a little softly) from 1 to 2, happens at about 15 miles per hour. Pulls strong in second all the way up to 70, if I bring my earplugs (revs really high to get there).
What I've tried: new fluid / filter, checked shift linkage, adjusted throttle valve per FSM, adjusted low-reverse band per FSM, adjusted kickdown band per FSM.
After doing my research, I tend to believe that the problem might be the front clutch, but I figure if it were that, reverse wouldn't work at all. Any other ideas, especially one that doesn't involve me pulling the trans (my absolute last resort)? Anyone have a non-push button 904 that is known to be good, especially one near Michigan?
