904 trans issue - no detent.

My 904 tranny just started acting like it does not have a shift lever detent any longer. The car does run and shift just fine but there isn't any resistance when shifting into drive or any gear for that matter.
Not sure what happened. Any ideas??

If you mean moving the lever on the transmission with linkage disconnected then you have a problem and need to look inside. It is basically a curved metal plate with small cut outs a small ball fits into held there by a small spring. The spring and ball are in the valve body and if I had to guess, I'd say the spring is broken or the plate has dropped down past the ball. It's called detent ball and spring. You don't want broken stuff floating around down there. Good Luck.

Yes, thank you, detent is what I meant. Well, it looks like I will be dropping the pan and investigating. Not what I wanted to do ;-)

Hey Ham, I'd look at it as a good time to change fluid and filter or maybe go to a deeper pan. Maybe put a shift kit in if it hasn't got one now.
