I'm ready to install my cylinder heads and when checking the fit of the gaskets, I noticed that the coolant holes in the head gaskets (Fel Pro) are only a small slot when the holes in the block are about 3/8 round. Does this seem correct? Maybe it's designed that way to restrict the flow?

Also, do I trust the steel valley pan gasket to seal the intake ports or should I use the facing gaskets as insurance?

the small slots do what you think to restric flow and are correct.if you are running an aluminum intake the backing gaskets are a good idea since the torque is only half the cast iron #'s.if running the cast iron intake, the pan is fine as long as it is new.

^^^ What he said, but I am just using a valley pan and no gaskets with my edelbrock torker intake on a 440. and It seems to seal fine. Just use copper spray a gasket on the port sealing areas.

Valley pan only for the intake because chances are you won't get anything else to fit in there. Head gaskets are fine.
