A question on the air cleaner lid for a 1969 Roadrunner

Hello all. I'm somewhat new to classic MOPAR's and have been keeping my eyes open for a 68-70 Roadrunner. (always liked em)

I'm looking a 1969 Roadrunner that is advertised as having the original 383 engine in it. However the air cleaner lid just says "Road Runner Engine" as shown above. The car does have the air grabber hood.

Now I've been to lots of shows and seen lots of pics depicting the "Coyote Duster" air cleaner hood. Is this something that should be on this Roadrunner? I've done some searching on google and what not and haven't turned up anything yet.

If that is a pic of the air grabber hood car then that is not the correct air cleaner, The air grabber air cleaner is oblong shaped and has the coyote duster decal on it, also the underside of the hood should have the plastic ducting that goes from the openings in the top of the hood to the air cleaner .the ducting fits tight to the air cleaner .hope this helps, someone may have pics,my car dosent have an air grabber.

That's a 70 RR .. may be other pics there though

Here's what the AG breather looks like for 69 .. notice 3 speed windshield wiper mopar. Required with the N96 AG hood option as AC won't fit w/ 2 speed wiper. But you can change it

Does the car have the air grabber box on the bottom of the hood?

Air grabber cars used the 3 speed wiper motor to clear the air cleaner and fender tag code N-96

If it has the original 383 in it, it will have the VIN# on the passenger side of the oil pan rail. As said above, that's the wrong air cleaner. But if you are paying for a numbers matching engine, that's minor compared to the wrong engine.

Ok I think I may have finally typed in the right combo of words to find my answer. So if the vents are black and fixed, as pictured above, it is a non air-grabber hood and the air cleaner in the original post is correct. If they are red and turned upright, it should be the coyote duster air cleaner lid with plastic ducts under the hood.

If this is wrong please correct me.

That air cleaner in your orig post is not the correct air cleaner, period.
A non-AG RR would have an air cleaner similar to this;

The air cleaner in your pic isn't correct for any mopar muscle car it looks
Like an aftermarket with a repop pie tin installed. Other than that you are correct
On the differences of the air grabber and standard roadrunner hoods

Is this a picture of the actual car you are looking at or an example? There's nothing wrong with running that setup (although that element is really tall LOL). If you like you can find a cleaner like the one bolt-action posted, which is correct for a non AG car (AG cars have N96 option on fender tag and 3 speeds wipers for breather clearance), later when one falls in your lap or you are ready for a change. They are not too hard to find. I have a few that need cleaned / painted up myself that I plan to post for sale eventually as do others. Point is I wouldn't stress that air cleaner.

If you have a specific car you are close to pulling the trigger on you could post some more photos here and I"m sure the family will answer questions and point out incorrect stuff we see If you want the help.

Thanks a lot for all the replies. I actually was a bit impulsive and gave the guy a deposit since it met so many of my criteria at a decent price. He has been pretty straight forward with everything so far and sent me lots of great pics. He's also said I can back out if I'm uncomfortable which helps. However, I haven't made the 700 mile trip yet to see it/buy it and I'm just making sure all my ducks are in a row. I guess it just seems weird to have an almost show quality RR and have the wrong air cleaner on there. Like I said...new to older MOPAR's.

Looking at it again, I was thinking the same thing, youre prob correct, or '66 (?)

You already checked the VIN, correct?

I do agree, it is odd that he'd running that air cleaner, I could understand it more, IF, there were some hidden perf mods (intake, carb, heads, Elec. Ign, etc) but that motor/engine bay looks very sanitary and stock, so the use of that air cleaner is odd.

truth be told, I typically run the type of air cleaner that the OP, Robe81, pictured in his post, although, not near as tall as that filter.
