Hi All,

So my transmission is making a heavy vibration when decelerating or coasting but hardly any to none on throttle with vibration getting worse over 45mph. I removed the inspection cover to find it leaking from the input shaft retainer. Safe to say that i think the input shaft bearing is bad. Has anybody been able to pull the bearing out the front and replace with the trans on the bench without opening the case and dissembling the entire case? I had inspected the trans prior to putting it in the car and everything looked like new. It shifts perfect throughout all the gears and is super smooth, it would be a shame to dissamble it completely.. The trans in question is a 23 spline, iron case 833 from a 73 challenger. Any advice regarding the bearing removal would be greatly appreciated.

mopar, if it were me I would completely disassemble it. Factory service manual is good but Jamie Passons latest book is the best one I have out of 2 other brands and would recommend it. $22 bucks if I recall. If it needs 1 part replaced? good luck, and it ain't that bigga deal if your a wrench.

No you cannot remove the bearing from the front. Taking it apart is the only way.

Make sure your U-joints and transmission mount are ok.

I figured it wasn't going to be simple. Now when i remove the tailshaft there is roller bearings in between the input shaft and the main shaft. Is that all i have to watch for when removing the main shaft? I know they tend to fall out when removed, but is there anything else that may fall out? thanks

You have to remove the counter gear shaft, and drop the cluster. There will be 72 rollers and 2 or 3 washers plus the thrust washers on each end of the counter gear. There will be 16 pilot roller bearings inside the rear of the input shaft.

Get a new pilot bushing while your at it .
Passions book is ok but read the disassembly and assembly part about 8 times , some of it is scattered around , I made a dummy shaft for the counter shaft bearings (makes life easier) and front and rear seal drivers and a improved rear snap holder , also made a clamp to hold the tail shaft housing when lowering it in (leaves your hands free to hold parts in place.
PM me if you want to use them

Right on thanks for the tips, found this original Chrysler video about the 833 trans and some tips on troubling shooting and disassembly/assembly.

So there's absolutely no way of removing the input shaft assembly without taking out the counter shaft? It doesn't seem to make sense why it needs to be removed if the main shaft can be removed without touching the counter shaft. Just seems like an unnecessary step to complicate it more. Will post pics when i have the trans on the bench.

Oh I forgot to add, the pilot bushing is brand new just installed with the trans about 400 miles ago.

All will become clear when to start to take trans apart. At this point I would take advise from those that posted the most basic beginning procedure methods.

If this is just a leak at the bearing retainer seal, why do you assume the bearing is bad? If the oil got on the clutch that could cause some vibration. You can just replace the seal in the retainer.

I do have a vibration from the front portion of the trans, around the bellhousing area. Went into the bellhousing to further investigate the cause and saw that the bearing retainer is covered in oil and is running down. I thought no doubt that would be the culprit. Clutch/flywheel is dry and clean, no oil on it what so ever. Only put on about 100 miles since putting in the trans trying to button down all the bugs the car is having.
