How much hp and torque can an A833 overdrive transmission take?

My buddy had one in his Charger with a mild 440 for quite awhile and it took the pounding no problem. I believe the only huge difference would be the size of the intermediate shaft but don't hold me in court to that.

My D100 stepside has a mild cam upgrade in a 69 10:1 440.

No issues.

Frequently driven in a "spirited manner".

if it is aluminum case, you can get bushings for the shafts.

I have one that I used with my stock 383 (in a 70 Road Runner) when I drove across country. I was told they could handle torque in the "300's". It is great for long distance driving but around town the gearing emasculated the Road Runner.

It is certainly not a transmission I would put behind my 500 stroker for spirited driving, but for cruising around behind a stock(ish) engine I think it would be OK if you mostly behave yourself.

I have turned down the big front bearing retainer to fit in a regular bellhousing....but the gear ratios in the tranny are not ideal...never have broke one tho...

Yes, but even in that thread there are a number of cautions about strength.

Hell, I still have my 833 iron case OD transmission. In a pinch, I would use it again. But I would be a little bit careful with it and avoid powershifts and dumping the clutch with sticky tires!
Yes, there are two sides. Some people have warnings against doing it, and some people actually have done it and say it works for them.

@flyingfarley can the 5.125” OD bearing retainer turn down enough to fit in a small block bellhousing, 4.35” I think? I’ve heard of people opening up the bellhousing hole.

I turned mine down to the bigger of the two standard sizes that mopar used.....mine was behind a small block but I had a lakewood bellhousing, which had the bigger mopar hole...would be easy to have a machine shop bore out the hole in the factory bellhousing to the 5.125 hole size

No, The bolt hole diameter has to be checked too. If your 4.354" retainer has the 3.70" dia bolt pattern for 307 bearing it won't work. The OD with 5.125" retainer has the 4.16" dia bolt pattern for the 308 bearing.

That’s what I thought when I measured.
