Guys, has anyone ever had their A833 four speed rebuilt and what did you pay? I am not comfortable doing it myself so i need to have it professionally done. The shop i am working with says $700 -$800 using Timken and non overseas parts. Any help is great, thanks!

Don't know if you have an 18 or 23 spline, but Passon Performance gets $1100 for a 23 spline rebuilt unit--not sure if you need to send back a core or what the details are...but you could be sure of quality work and parts with him!

I have a 23 spline, i actually just spoke to Passon and they have a deal on A833 overdrive units for $750. I would rather keep my unit since its original to the car. I am not too versed in the pros ad cons of the overdrive version.

Yep you can send him yours and have it done rite the first time !
I do them here at the shop and have done manuels for years. Even do some for the local tranny shop as alot of guys only do auto's.
You do need some pullers for the head bearing and such !
When I do one it's around $300 labor + parts if that helps you out ?

Thanks guys, Passon said $350 plus parts. The only other cost is shipping it to them. Probably gonna go that route since the local place wants $800 to do it. I would think Passon is a better option. Anyone know how much an A833 weighs?

I got a quote from a local guy who does them regularly for $500 including all the seals, bearings, etc. ( about $120 from Brewers for the rebuild kit). Keep in mind, that does not include any gears, synchros, shafts if any of them are worn and need replacement. I'm probably going with the deal Passon is offering for my 4 speed conversion this spring.$750 for a rebuilt OD833 with a warranty. Can't beat that.

Hey NJRR, what are the pros and cons of using the OD A833? I had thought someone mentioned they weren't as strong possibly.

I just went out to my garage and weighed an extra 69 a-833 that I had sitting out there and it weighed in at 120.6lbs. Hope this helps you out on this end. That is minus bell housing and with tail shaft.

From what I read and recall from that is thats is the aluminum case one .. but that can be mitigated somehow but I can't remember the details. I didn't get the impression the cast iron case had the same problems.

I spoke with Passon about the OD A833. His statement was it wasn't as strong/robust and the first gear was a bit doggy versus the standard units ratio. He said the OD version was obviously better for cruising at higher speeds. I am gonna just get mine rebuilt by Passon, that way it will still be matching #s rebuilt properly. Looks like its gonna run around $700 with shipping and assuming i dont need any gears, etc.

Yes the gear rations suck in the OD one due to the wide spread and low first gear but the main strength issue is related to the aluminum one i'm pretty sure. I'd do what you are doing though.

$700 rebuilt by him to incl shipping sounds like a good deal to me
