Hi everyone just curious to shifter feel in my Charger .
Transmission shifts through all gears perfectly no vibration no popping out of gear , reverse everything works .
Just noticing that even in gear there is a lot of play compared to the Muncie in my Chevelle .
I am new to the Charger so maybe this is normal ?
1-2 inch movement side to side maybe exaggerated with the longer shifter handle ?
Thanks Pete

Have you investigated what type of shifter is in the car? Could be an Inland or a Hurst. I don't have experience with Mopar manual transmissions but OE Inland shifters were always noted to be sloppy. But yes, the long shifter handle will exaggerate any free play in the shifter mechanism.

If you're talking about a Hurst shifter it may just need to be rebuilt. Not saying you can't do it yourself, but if it needs parts, I don't know where you'd get them. I've sent a couple back to Hurst for rebuilds and you wouldn't believe the difference in feel. Anybody know if Wayne Brewer can do anything for these shifters?

That's great thanks I'll look at the shifter thanks as well for the link has all the rebuild parts .

Make sure the square holes in the lever arms aren't ovaled out at the trans. The pivot pin in the shifters is undersize by about .030-.060". A correct size pin makes a huge difference. I made my own.

Have you determined that you have a Hurst shifter? What year is the Charger? I think the switch from Inlands to Hurst was made sometime during 1968. Of course it could have been updated over the years.

Looked at everything while my son moved the shifter around in all gears .
Everything is rebuilt and tight below .
I honestly think it's the way this unit works .
I can post pictures tomorrow if anyone wants a look .

Thanks

It would be hard to compare without feeling the shifter. If you could post a video, maybe we could make an attempt at a comparison to what we have. I don't consider mine sloppy, but it's not like a new Corvette either. Might just be the nature of the beast.

P.S.
Not sure about the Chargers, but the Road Runners had the inland shifter in '68. They went to Hurst in '69 and if I remember correctly, it was because of numerous complaints about the inland.

Thanks bud - yes I'm going to miss the Chevelle it was a fun car but I absolutely love the Charger .
Can't wait to go cruising .

Thanks

You probably already checked, but are you sure the bolts for the stick to the shifter mechanism are tight?

A833 w/Hurst. Normal. Characteristic.

I think you are right . Drove again today just quick but this seems to be the way it operates .
The other car I had was a Muncie 4 speed with a hurst shifter set up .
I like it will just take getting used to .

Thanks everyone for the replies

I remember a guy at a tire shop trying to put the 833 in first. He had two hand on the stick and the look on his face was indescribable. Wouldn't go in. As the owner I knew that you either let the clutch out in neutral or briefly bump second (first) and it drops right in to first at a dead stop.

Sounds familiar . Even before I put any of them in reverse while stopped I go to 1st then it goes in like butter . People don't get the older units
