I have a bad transmission for a superbee 1970, it has the tailshaft with 2 shifter mounting locations...
I have the opportunity to buy a recon unit but the tailshaft is different, the shift location holes seem to be in the correct position... but the body mount seems to be closer to the rear of the car...
I have only seen pics of the recon unit
first of all, can I swap out the tailshafts (easiest solution)
second... if I have to make a new body bracket... are the tailshafts the same length... I dont want to have to shorten the drive shaft
thanks for your help

Rich

70-up B/E tailstocks are same in dimension as the 68-69 B body unit except the 70-up has 2 shifter mounts, I have a fresh rebuilt 68-69 one for sale on here right now. Drive shaft will not change in length.

I stand corrected, sorry yes the mount on the B/E style is farther forward, I guess I never knew that, the other option is, just swap tailstocks from yours onto a 68-69 style trans , they are same mainshaft I know that for sure, because I rebuild them all the time and there is only one slip yoke B body mainshaft. Sorry for the confusion

You may have to swap rear bearings to fit your tailhousing, depending on what bearing the earlier trans has. There were two different OD bearings that were used.

Thailshaft is the rotating shaft inside.
Tailhousing is the outer housing with trans and shifter mount bosses.

You can use it as it is with a 1966-1969 trans crossmember and mount. It’s all bolt in. Driveshaft and speedo gear is the same.

Swapping the tail housing is not easy for most people. Physically demanding and mentally frustrating. If you have done this before then it’s easy to do again.

Got a factory service manual, it explains it. Take the thing mostly apart.

Every one I have seen used a 307 bearing, except, 18 spline Hemi, uses 308, and early A body used 207 bearing. The tailstocks will flip flop no problem, very simple procedure.
