ok...i need your opinoins on gauges...heres the dilemma:

a few months ago , i replaced all of my factory gauges, speedo, and tic toc tach. I replaced them because they were all yellowed, faded, and just all around just didnt look nice....BUT THEY ALL WORKED (still have them if ya need 'em). I bought everything from Vans and the new gauges work perfectly along with the speedo and tic toc tach....HOWEVER....they DO NOT read the same as the original ones..( but they look way nicer ) .

my concern mainly is the temp gauge. it hovers right on 230 when the original one read 190. ( i know its not runnin that hot)

the fuel gauge reads 1/4 low ( when it says 1/4 ...i have 1/2 tank ...i learned this thru trial and error)

the oil gauge reads about right...35 pounds. (stock 383)

the amp gauge reads dead on

heres what i need your opinion on:

i DO NOT want after market gauges inside the car...so i thought about putting some "accurately" reading gauges under the hood (so i know whats really goin on ) just the temp and oil gauges.

i want BOTH gauges to work...inside and under hood. i know how to do the work and make them function. i need to know if you think this is a good idea (most will say yes to that)..and what are the most accurately reading gauges electrical or mechanical? probably mechanical since i wont have to pull power away from the dash gauges.( they only run on 5 volts)

lemmee know whatchathink !:hello2:

If the new gauges look cool and although they might be a smidgen off...who cares...as long as you have a pretty good idea what is up with the fuel level...oil...etc...leave well enough alone. Marla

I have always liked the mechanical gauges because of the faster response on the needle and no need for sending units. The ability to just glance in at the temp gauge w/o the car running was always handy in the staging lanes waiting to run. I would add a set of mechanical gauges and verify your readings on your restored gauges from them. The 40 degree variation on the water temp would be a concern. I suppose you could send them back to Vans for calibration. Did you replace the sending unit with the new gauges? Or are they supposed to work with stock sending units?

yes...all new sending units and all new gauges (except fuel...im gonna get a new tank soon coz it has a big ugly DENT in it)

have you called vans with your dilema and asked them for advise?

no i did not call them. i know what theyll say anyway...and its not their fault.... its really not a big deal coz i know everything is running fine...im just an **** retentive moron that has to know all the facts all the time with that car!
