Last week when I was working on the transmisson I noticed what appears to be a Stewart Warner speedometer adapter attached to the speedo outlet on the trans...its a 67 trans but I didn't think you would have to run an adapter. I removed it and spun it and it looks like its a 1/1 ratio.

Curious, Stick or Automatic? If it is a later trans it must have the large speedo gear, correct?

The car is an automatic (67) and had 3.91 gears when I bought it...now
3.23's. Is there a difference in the shape of the cable end on the 63's that would need an adapter to be used?

The early cars up to i believe 65 used a speedo gear that clipped on to the cable itself. Then the cable end pushed into the trans and was held in place with bolt and clip. Do you have a cable now? Some of the MW cars used an adapter.

Who ever built the car may have used the adapter to actually adapt the cable to the trans.

I went through some papers that I got with the car....man, this guy put some money into it. Probably explains why things are so solid....check out the mileage. If you look at the top slip you will see that the cable was replaced and the adapter may be due to the speeds shown listed. I guess Texas wants the speedo's to read correctly. I tried calling Bill but didn't get an answer...I would love to talk with him.

Yep, i'll bet you have the newer style speedo pinion because you have a later trans and they used the adapter to connect cable to trans. You are going to have to change speedo pinion in trans to correct speedo reading now that you have changed rear gears.

two hunderd bucks may have also helped him beat a speeding ticket/ loss of liceince. 15 mile discrepency at 60.

I will have to check it and see what it reads when I get it on the road.
