Hi everyone, i am 17 and have a 71 sattelite that's been sitting for 20 years. I'm trying to get it started, but the air cleaner system is making it very confusing. It's already hard to try and figure out what's needed with all the options on the car. Can I just delete it, plug the vacuum lines, and then get a new valve cover? I don't know much about older cars/how this system works, but it seems like this could be a simple procedure (as older 318s didn't come with it). Any advice on the subject would be appreciated.

The car is probably equipped with the ECS which prevents fuel evaporation into the atmosphere. The hose connections are really very simple, it's more important to have/get the correct carburetor. Follow the schematic one hose at a time...

So I'm good as long as I plug all the vacuums on the carb? Rebuilding the original carb right now. Just wanted to make sure the car would start and run without the emissions stuff. It's got a egr valve thing on too but if I'm not mistaken looks like I can just plug that off too.

Don't worry about the air cleaner. Get yourself a carter bbd and bolt it on. There are probably like 2 vacuum ports on the carb. One that goes to the vacuum advance on the distributor and another that connects to the pcv valve on the drive side valve cover. You can put some rubber plugs on them first and then connect the fuel line to the carb. After that, look for any lines that are coming out of the intake manifold and make sure they're connected to something or plug them with rubber plugs. That should be it.

Something like this.

Thanks! I'm rebuilding the carb right now (there are no cheapie replacement for the 2168 model online). The two ports you just mentioned were the other 2 I was trying to figure out the purpose of so that helps alot.

Any port that has vacuum on the carb AND on the intake manifold needs to be plugged or connected. If not it'll be sucking air and that's a vacuum leak which will make it run like crap. If you don't know where they go just plug them first.

You really only need 3 vacuum lines for the engine to run and the car to drive. Distributor, PCV valve, and brake booster. You can plug everything else to start with.
