Air compressor died! Any recommendations for a good 60-80 gallon upright around $1000?

My biggest peeve is the noise, unless you can locate unit outside or confined acoustically somehow. A suggestion for any unit to buy, plumb in a fan cooled air cooler between the compressor and the tank, with an automatic condensate drain, for the cooler and the tank. If your tasks are one man and not lengthy, I'd suggest small tank with big CFM compressor. Filling up an empty big tank just to air a tire is wasteful IMO. If your tasks are long, compressor runs the same amount of time or uses same amount of wattage to compress the air used., no matter how big the task is.

check cfm on compressor if going to paint.

You need an honest-to-goodness 5HP compressor with an 80gal. tank.
220v., and the motor should run @ around 1725RPM. I'd try some farm
auctions. My neighbor picked up a Speedaire (Grainger) 7.5HP almost
new compressor at an auction for $800.00. Right place, right time. Most
air tools you'll never need more than 100psi, so a single-stage would be
ideal, but they are harder to find.

Why not just replace the pump if it is failing?
I did that. It breathed new life into it. The electric drive motors last a LONG time, the pumps wear out a lot faster.

I used to have an 80 gallon Chicom Porter Cable 2 stage that was decent, until I realized you couldn’t get any parts for it at all. Not even gaskets. I sold it and bought a dead 80 gallon 2-stage Ingersoll Rand for $150. Had a cracked flywheel because flywheel nut came loose and sheared the key. It was 30+ years old , but I could get parts all day long. I sold the 3 phase baldor motor for $200, bought a single phase baldor off fleabay for $500 so I could run off house 220. Put rings, bearings, and valve plates in pump, plus new flywheel, and viola, $800 American 2 stage compressor. Plenty of air, like 18 cfm @175, and relatively quiet. Parts will never again be an issue.

Like this one? I added the orange strobe so from afar it was obvious when the compressor was cycling.

That's what I did with mine too. Got a cast iron compressor with more CFM for less than $200.

Seriously if you want a compressor that will last you the rest of your life and power any air tool or blast cabinet, step up and buy a 2 stage cast iron pump, 80 gallon, 5 hp or more 220 volt compressor. You won’t regret it whether new or used. I bought an Ingersoll Rand about 25 years ago to replace a single stage 60 gallon that couldn’t keep up. Shop around, there are good deals out there. Good luck.

IR2375N5, 5 horse is $2339 shipped at Northern, which is what mine is, but circa 1980’s. 7.5 horse is about $4 grand. Any American made 5+ horse 2-stage 60-80 gallon will do pretty much anything a hobbyist needs. For a lifetime if you take care of it!
