I read that running an 8 gauge wire with a fuse from the alternator to the starter relay then another 8 gauge wire from the relay to the battery with a fuse. What type of fuse should i use. I heard a 12 gauge fusible link is good but cant find at any of my local parts stores

install what the store has on the shelf , it will save you in the future.

I ran a Buss breaker similar to this when I put a high amp alt on my mustang...

You could also use a mega fuse or similar...image.jpg

If your local auto parts store doesn't have anything, you might look at Radio Shack or a car stereo shop...

If im installing a fuse and my alternators rated for 75 amps should i install an 80 amp fuse?

I like the mega fuse idea. Should i use 1 fuse before the starter relay and one after? I know my parts store has those. Thanks

Picked up one of these today with a 100 amp fuse. Gonna splice it between the 8 gauge wire from the alternator and the starter relay. Should i put another between the relay and the battery or is that overkill? Thanks. Hopefully my 78 amp alternator can power my radio amp, electric fan and h4 headlights

It makes a big difference. I did mine last year. Also takes a big load off the headlight switch.

You want to size the fuse to protect the wire from burning up. Look up your wire size and length on the chart and make sure your fuse is below the rated amps.gaugeguide.jpg

Thank you! Should i install one afrer the starter relay to the battery too?

That may be a bit overkill, but doesn't hurt. You'll have a warm fuzzy that the wire from the Batt to the SR won't burn up on you ever.

Couple things to bring up...The Relay driven headlight system like Eric brought up is a great idea. It does make a big difference. I would recommend using 14 gauge for the wires running to the H4 Halogens. Ceramic plugs to the bulbs wouldn't hurt either. 78 amps, I would be real serious about an Ammeter bypass and eliminating the main feed terminal connector in the bulkhead connector, if you haven't done so.

As far as your Amp, hard to say. How many watts? Once you have it installed and it just so happens the Alt isnt cutting it, you could either buy a high performance audio battery like a Kinetic or XS, add an additional battery, use an audio capacitor or upgrade your alt. When you run your wires for your amp, make sure you keep the main feed wire and remote wire for the amp separated from the pre-amp outs and/or speaker wires. Near each other, you will get bad interference.

Do yourself a favor and go to the Mad Electrical web site--I think it's simply madelectrical.com
Extremely helpful (and easily understood) Mopar electrical material there.

Thanks guys. Im gonna run a relay setup for sure and im gonna look into findind a higher amp alternator. I upgraded to a 70s style voltage regulator and wiring harness.

All good advice here! Seriously, do yourself a favor and go to that MAD site or give 'em a call. I've been dealing with those guys for years, and those folks and their products, tips, and info are top notch!
