I have a 1974 satellite with 318 and a 904 trans and the trans is starting to go out. I found a guy who has a rebuilt trans that came out of a 1978 Amc Concord with a 232 straight 6. I was wondering if it would bolt up to my 318 with no problems? I've been searching for about an hour and can't find any info.

I'm pretty sure the bell housings are different but I don't know if they will mate up. And I think AMC used different tail shafts.

I am pretty positive they will not interchange. Even if they would, you're talking about a 6 cylinder transmission going behind a V8. A 904 is NOT a 904. The 6 transmission probably has 3 pinion planets, 3 clutch direct drum, a light duty converter and narrow bands. It's no mate for a V8 even if it would fit.

Good points. And. I think I remember reading somewhere that because the bellhousings and tail housings on the amc torque command trannys were different, they were shorter than their torqueflite cousins. So, even if you did get one to attach to the engine, you will have to get a different drive shaft. Plus the ring gears and flex plate mountings are probably different. So, you'll have to swap your old converter into the new tranny and hope its not your converter that is going out.

I think the point is you want a quick and easy swap and I don't think that would be it.

Look, I'll just say it. The 904 is so simple, you could train a chimp to build one. I'm not trying to be funny. I'm dead serious. The best thing you can do is buy a copy of the ATSG service group book on the Torqueflites. It's a VERY comprehensive manual that will tell you step by step how to build the transmission. I can do one in literally 30 minutes once it's on the bench, including the valve body. They are perhaps the easiest transmission to build. Even moreso I believe than a powerglide. If you don't know how and you can change your own oil, you can build a three speed Torqueflite. It's really that simple. The hardest thing is the valve body.....and they are REAL easy compared to say a Ford 5R55E. I promise you it is something you will absolutely NEVER regret learning if you do it.

Here it is. Best money you'll EVER spend.

I would think the 904 would be fairly easy to find. I've seen several on cl. I paid 50 bucks for the one thats in my car right now. My plan is to get my original tranny rebuilt and put it in(one day). I've been driving around for over a year now and except for a little problem with the kickdown, it drives great.
