Amp gauge conversion 67 gtx

Hey guys has anyone tried a conversion from original amp gauge to a voltmeter in so keeping the original appearance this is probably a tough one but we as mopar heads are really great at finding the perfect solution to our problems and think many would buy into it , thanks for considering this solution, as I know at least one of our members is an electrical engineer and as many are very sharp with such issues!

I have seen others do it but what vehicle I don't remember. As i recall, someone found a volt meter that had similar look and font as the stock Mopar Amp gauge, he then disassembled the volt meter and installed it into the dash in the Amp gauge location. If I remember right, it was a SW gauge. I know this isn't super helpful but I know it has been done. Of course the other option is to have someone convert your stock gauge.

I've had Shannon at Redline do 3 conversions for me so far. I know a few years ago he switched from a standard style volt gauge to one that has a stepper motor built in it. Acts like the ones in newer cars.

Is the original ammeter in good shape, connections tight and well maintained? Why the need to re-engineer the original design? Keep the original appearance and function. Update the known weak points, by-pass the bulkhead connections, upsize the charging circuit wiring.

Yes agreed and all is done as you suggested but curiosity minds look for other solutions and by reaching out across our contacts so very interesting solutions have been found and yes the desire is to keep it as original looking as possible!

To possibly lower the current load to the original dash gauge without effecting it’s functionality

you will reduce the load throught the ammeter just getting a higher output alternator able to feed all the car requirements ( and nothing sourced up from batt side ) to keep the batt out of the sourcing game as much as posible. This will keep centered the amm reading. No reading ( centered ) it means no load going through, nor charging or discharging.

Not because you have full path available on cluster it means you have load going throught

I converted the unit in my 67 Coronet a few years ago. My arm sweeps from the top, I think yours from the bottom? if so, you'll need different model voltmeter. I've been very happy with it.
