Another 727 quest for information

Hello all.
I've been trying to find some information regarding 727s. You know how internet searches go- too much information or not enough. I have searched here and gotten some helpful information but could still use some more.
I have a 73 Roadrunner with a big block and what the codes say is a standard duty 727. I've seen codes for light duty transmission and heavy duty transmission. As far as the hd trans goes, does that mean 4 pinion planetaries and possibly the 5 clutch pack? I think the hd designation may only refer to big block applications but can't say for sure either way.
I ask this because my car was having some trans issues the last time I had it out. I'm kind of swaying back and forth between a rebuild now, or swapping in another trans for now with a rebuild later. In searching for a trans I have been looking for the ones with 4 pinion planetaries and if it has the larger clutch pack all the better. I have a line on a 727 out of a Winnebago which I think has what I'm looking for in a trans. I have not seen it yet so I need to check it out before I buy it. I understand that it probably will have the short tail housing with the brake mounted to it.
As far as Winnebagos go, are there corresponding numbers to match the trans to the engine? They still have the 440 that came out of it, which is how I found the trans. Winnebago is a 1974.
As far as the hd internals, is there a way to confirm this without a teardown?
If it is a short tailshaft, can this be swapped out, or should I just be looking at this as a parts trans for the hd goodness?
 
Read the above book. Make sure it has 4 clutch forward drum (you can by one if yours is a 3 clutch), 3.8 lever, Trans-Go or Turbo action valve body, shim the front servo solid, block the accumulator rod. That's all it takes to handle 700hp with ease. 3 pin planets are more than enough.

Is that set up comfortable for the street? Kind of hoping the winnebago trans has the larger clutch pack, and using that trans as a donor. Ordered that book 10 days ago. Still waiting.

Damn I got mine delivered in 2 days.
 
My 1 cents worth (half worthless) is that you are wasting time with the Winnebago trans. You will have to change out the tail housing, output shaft, governor - no telling what else. Your current transmission is probably just as good as a starting place. Even if coded a standard transmission it probably has a 4 friction front clutch and decent parts in it if it's in a factory BB Roadrunner. Not sure what the HD designation represented in that era but possibly a Hemi transmission (I know - Hemi wasn't available in a vehicle by then) or 440- 6bbl trans (or this either) or a HD truck trans.

You might be able to find some numbers stamped on the pan rail of the Winnebago trans and decode it - not sure if anyone stamped a transmission headed to Winnebago. Maybe someone knows.

You bet. The only thing I failed to mention is the governor. If you want higher rpm auto function (not manually moving the shifter) you will need to modify or swap the governor. Be aware that there are 2 different governor bore diameters, 1.00"/ 1.0625"

AR67GTX, I agree. Not sure what the "standard" & "HD" designations meant in '73. The Hemi trans (XHD?) had MANY different components (wide 5 disc drum with more springs & wide front band, pump modified for the drum, different front servo springs, 5.0 lever, 4 pinion planetaries both front & rear), compared to the HP 440 stuff. The RV trans would require major parts exchange.
Ya want the '71 & later front pump with 4 disc front drum, I still like the 4 pinion planetaries (at least in front, opinions vary), red clutches & red front band, 3.8 lever. Don't know if I'd trust the stamping, parts get rebuilt & changed.
