What happened to the DC crash thread?
"Request visual separation" was the cause.
Explained here-
Lord knows I'm no expert. Hell, I'm not even layman knowledgeable here....
But it seems to be that the tower handed off responsibility to the helicopter to miss the jet
because the chopper ASKED for it and was granted that permission - twice.
The chopper even said they saw the plane they needed to miss when asked...which we know
they didn't, in hindsight.
That guy in the video is apparently making the argument that the tower shouldn't have agreed
to hand off responsibility to the helicopter and by doing so, even though the controller isn't technically
liable anymore under the rules....he still was, because his own instrumentation was telling him a collision
was imminent (or at least enough of a possibility that the systems' Collision Avoidance warning was issued).
Anyone who's ever been to that airport knows how close to DC it is, how small a facility it is and how restricted
air space is right around it - the years I lived in that region, Dulles was always supposed to replace "National"
(Reagan) airport for all commercial traffic in the DC area, leaving National to be just a bespoke airport for
government type folks.
That never happened, of course....and Dulles is far enough outside the region that people don't use it like
was hoped.
All that to say, it's damn congested in the air and on the ground around Reagan all the dang time...
and they need to stop with the military VIP helo services just criss-crossing commercial airline routes along
the Potomac all together.
Make those choppers go the long way around; it's not gonna kill those VIP's to ride another 5 minutes.
