Good day all,
The following is my current setup, runs very well but next upgrade will be camshaft. Put in the .484 mopar purple because, well, i just had it sitting around. However, what would you recommend. Solid? Roller is too $$$.

383 block - 450CI
3.9 crank
Eagle rods, ross pistons (10.1:1 CR)
Stealth heads
Mopar 484 cam
Eddy intake and carb (750)

Its a street car with the occasional track visit. I just dont want to have dumped this much $$ in to this engine and have a small dollar item like a cam, hold back a bunch of power.

cam changes are not always a good bang for the buck. i think folks put to much confidence in "cams". if i had some money to blow i'd put it in the cylinder heads.

The heads would be a excellent place to start.
Knowing how the heads flow in terms of CFM at various lifts to deter in the balance between intake and exhaust will also help with a better cam to choose from. There's really nothing wrong with the purple cam. Very good power can come from it. However, better power can be made with better information.

IMO, for a street bruiser, get a cam with as much lift as the head can handle. Select the duration on its RPM band. Style, (Hyd. solid etc...) is your call.

Ok thanks for the information. The stealth heads have been good so far, will get them ported soon as well. I just keep hearing people say "old technology etc" with that cam

Yep,old technology that still works !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

First time with a "hot" mopar engine so still learning what works and doesnt. So instead of changing the cam, focus more and getting the heads flowing better? Was also told the eddy performer intake isn't the greatest choice either.

the 284/.484 is mopars version of the racer brown ssh25. it's aggressive enough. those people with their "old technology" point of view probably can't understand a cam card least wise a full lobe profile.

some of the OOTB flow numbers i've seen of stealth heads are under whelming. even edelbrocks aren't what they're advertised to be but closer to advertised numbers than stealths. more power would be gained by sending the heads to a competent head guru than any reasonable cam change. get the heads working then chase a better cam; preferably not a hydraulic.

Why can't we have a section/thread for street combo's on this Board? Some place everyone can look and maybe base their selection on what other people have found to really work already. Similar to what's in the racing section.

Agreed, the amount of time I have spent on here searching for people's setups and what works is ridiculous haha.

The old technology "509" cam and the old 915 heads, with porting and 2.14/1.81 valves work well for me in a 451. Any improvements in cyl head airflow are going to be of benefit no matter what the cam selection is. Where as cam improvements are not going to have as much effect as good port air flow. So as has been said, go with better heads first, then go with the right cam. I like something around .525 lift, 295 duration for a good street/ strip cam. My 451 with the 509 cam has good off idle torque from about 1500 RPM up. But I run alot of initial spark advance, plus vacumn advance. It seems to like that, along with alot of C/Ratio and 100 octane fuel. Good luck!

Members post there combos showing what it takes to run 12's. 11's etc...
ForAbodiesonly also has this.
There a sticky up top the forum in that section.
I hope that helps you out.

I'm confused!
1. What is the weight of the car?
2. Tramsmission type? (Auto or manual)?

Maybe old school but an not ignorant. I do know how to profile a cam and read a cam chart. I also understand the aluminum head craze. They are not the buy and bolt on that most people think they are. If the need for real power is what is desired I will agree with you there is no substitute for good machine work iron or aluminum.

Not everyone wants to run at the strip. If you read a lot of the combos on there, they can be driven on the street for short trips or whatever but not they might not be highway friendly. A street/driver combo sticky isn't a bad idea.

I was under the impression that this section was for that purpose. Just a few here that can not leave their race builds in the racing section.

True, but, some of those combo are mello and extremely streetable.

I can understand that. I echo my reply above.

I only mentioned what I did as a venue to investigate.
Just trying to help.
