any experience with these converters?

From what I have seen, a cheap convertor is.........a cheap convertor. My Turbo Action worked absolutely great but was expensive. I pulled it and the 727 for a 4 speed swap. Rowing gears is fun, unless you're in stop and go.
 
The stall rating is impossible to rate without knowing the vehicle weight, engine size, camshaft operating range, axle gearing and tire size. All those factors combine to determine the stall. A 64 Valiant with a 170 slanty and 2.76 gears is the weakest, lightest car you can figure, while a 77 New Yorker with every available option and a smogged out 440 would be the heaviest. While they would use different transmissions, their official "stall" rating would be vastly different.
A low power engine in a heavy car needs LESS stall. A high power engine in a light car can be more forgiving to a wider range of stall ratings. A call to a converter manufacturer will help immensely.

Torque converters are either made by cheap rebuilder companies and they are marginal or Specialty guys like Frank Lupo from Dynamic who can produce really well tuned converters for you. Anyway a good converter will run you minimum $500.00 to 600 dollars, as much as 900.00 or more for all out race.
