I dated the wife tonight driving my 73 Road Runner and must have pulled the key out too fast when I parked the car. It took 12 minutes to get the key back in to start the car. I manipulated the key release, and turned the key switch back and forth until the key would finally go into the hole.
Do I need to worry that it will happen again?
Will this part significantly degrade over the 38 year life of the car?
Only 83k miles with a cheesey restoration.

thanks for any input :)

How was the steering wheel?
I've seen the pressure of a wheel turned tight against the lock (easy to do under power assist) trap the column and key after the ignition was shut off.

Yes i have experienced this a bunch of times with other cars (mostly newer ones though) -Turning the steering did not do anything but turn its free play, this time it did nothing to free up the mechanism. The key could not slide in at all.

you dated your wife?.....can you explain this to me ?

Women need all that lovey, dovey romance stuff, so when I want to go out to eat, I tell her you don't have to make dinner tonight, I want to take you out on a date. (Which is gonna get there thru the Road Runner-WIn Win for me) She feels special, I get to drive my car and eat out.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH....so theres a method to your madness....I LOVE IT..:headbang: i have this fantasy....... OF RUNNING MY X OVER WITH MY ROAD RUNNER!...youre givin me ideas,,,,thanks buddy!:hello2:

after finishing laughing at tpodwdog's post back to topic.the switch can where out internally as well as the key.if you pulled it out really agressive you may have bent a tumbler inside or the key itself(the old aluminum one's bend super easy)i would just pay close attention each time you put the key in or pull it out.if it happens again you could buy a new lock assembly or have yours redone at a locksmith.

Hey Dog, I've heard of this being done before...but I'm told it is very hard on the paint, and on the suspension components!!

Grins on the marital issues!
I recently replaced the ignition lock on my 73 RR. I had it all apart anyway--plus it was sometimes hard to get the key in and out (no marital issues implied there!). I was replacing the ignition switch and had the steering wheel off plus the turn signal assembly. It's a lot to go thru, but the lock should last another 39 years that way!

BTW, I changed the ig sw because engine wouldn't shut off. But the real problem was 2 wires with insulation burned off (heavy red & black wires). Hopefully you don't have that problem.
