Just got out of a convo with the refuse rep.

I have no idea what the going rates are, but I think it's whatever they can get you to pay...

The guy first told me for a 4 yard dumpster emptied every other week was $60 a month. If I went down to a 2 yard, it would be $40.

I said let's keep it at the 4 yard, which it currently is.

Then he emails me a contract and it's for $75.

It's also a three year contract with an automatic three year renewal, and a 60 day prior to end of term notice requirement to cancell.

I asked about early termination, just in case, and he sait it's 6 times the monthly charge, so it would be $450, unless I cancel within a very small window and then only every three years.

Does that sound normal?

Don't most contracts go month to month after the initial term?

Wow.

I pay 44.11/month for a 3 yd. picked up every other week. Kind of the same as you but a two year contract. What really gets me is the $3/month 'administrative fee' and then of course the fuel surcharge which was 16.650% this past billing cycle. They keep raising this every 3 months and is in the contract that they can set it at whatever they want. I checked around and all the competitors do the same. Sort of a grey shady area in the contract.

So that 44.11 figure includes those other charges?

Sounds like my $60 figure might be right for that 4 yarder.
I hope they don't add any of those charges after the fact.

I think we only have one company around here, and they have the county residential contract as well.

No, the 44.11 is the contract price and then they add the fees and fuel surcharge on top.

can we charge our employers a surcharge for getting to work?.....all these moronic companies do it...WHY CANT WE?

OOOhh baby, Do I have a story for you!!!
I have 4 locations with dumpsters and use a 6 yrd emptied every other week. I had Waste Management in three locations and am down to 1. I would cancel with them in the last one, but there is no one else reliable.
Yes, what you said does sound like what this industry does on a regular basis. I had to pay about a grand in each location to "get out" of my contract after being a paying customer for 9 years on automatic payment. But the new rates were such a savings, it made it worth it. My monthly bills were approaching 250 a month. They had us at a lower rate for a while but continue to inch up the rates over time. So my advice would be to shop around when your contract comes up.
Stay away from WM as it took them 5 months to pick up their dumpsters out of my lots after I canceled with them. They also have too many departments and WILL screw up your bill. I started a new location in jan. 2010 and it took at least 15 phone calls and 5 months for them to figure out that they assigned me 2 different account numbers. Paid on one and late on the other. What a nightmare.
Also, be aware that weight plays a part in how much they charge. Not sure what you are tossing in there.
60 bucks doesn't sound too bad from my experience, but call everyone you can to get prices and they ARE flexible, so ask to see if you can get it reduced. Maybe if you go on auto pay?

Good luck. LOL

I pay 130.54 per month out the door; taxes and all the bullshit included-for a 2yd dumpster twice a week. (which works out to 68.28 for a 4yd picked up every other week-roughly)

with NO CONTRACT--and this Chicago proper, mind you. Land of getting screwed at every turn when you own a biz...

if they want you to sign a contract, try and find somebody else. with things the way they are, there is bound to be other companies that are hungry for biz... .02

good luck!

Well, now I'm learning a LOT about the refuse business.

Seems Republic had bought out all the other companies around here, and severely pushed back the teritory of Waste Management.

I did find a local startup that has been in business only since October 2011.

They told me that all the previous local companies didn't make it past 2 years before republic bought them out.

Anyway, this new co, Gator, gave me a price of $50 all inclusive, and my choice of 1,2, or 3 year contracts with a 5% cap on rate increases after the term, and only a 60 day notice with no fee to terminate.

The sales girl (cute, in a high maintenance sort of way), a former Republic employee, said even if they get bought out, the contract is still valid even if Republic tries to say otherwise.

Wow, I kept having visions of NYC, NJ, or Chicago "Sanitation" strong arm techniques.

Just go with the smaller company i was in the buisness for 25 years till i went on disability. these big companys make it hard for sales to compete with smaller companys i worked for bfi then allied waste bought us out . when republic bought us out thats when they let me go i had been out to long. its getting to be a pain for these big companys to operate so thats why they keep selling where i worked 250.000 profit for a qtr and corp still moaned,:icon_joker:
