Does the info shown give what the original engine was?

So far I got Dodge 880 medium station wagon assembled at jefferson ave Detroit 1964

Does the info shown give what the original engine was?

Yes...and no.

This appears to be a Dodge Custom 880 HT wagon (code 568 on the bottom of the tag). Therefore the standard engine would be a 361-2. Since it's the standard engine, it was not coded on the tag.

This sound about right?

Well the engine has a 4 barrel on it. The block stamping reads
Top row: V 41
Second row: 6 8
This date seems to match the body date. Is it possible that this is a 413 and original to the car?

Yes, it looks like a 413 but AFAIK, the 413 was not offered in 64 Dodges. The next step up from the 383 was the 426 and it wasn't offered in the 880s.

A 64 383 2 bbl is 10:1.

That's good to know.

Thanks for all the information.

Is it common to find build sheets on these cars? Wouldn't a build sheet confirm if the car was built with the 361 or if this is some kind of oddball 413?
Where are build sheets typically found?

The vehicle SON (shipping order number) is 0718, July 18, and the date on the block ID pad is 6-8, June 8. The V41 means V 1964 and 41 for 413 CI. Just becaus it is not listed in option books does not mean it couldn't be ordered that way. Money talks and BS walks...

Let's say that was true. Optional engines were coded on tags. What code and where on the tag should we expect to find that?

Isn't it the "52" under the "AB"?

I think the "B" is 1=2bbl and 2=4bbl.

Not sure on the "A" for 64.

That position of the engine code would be correct if this car was from the Lynch Road plant. (First picture AB/06)

Hamtramck used QR to code the engine (Second picture QR/06)

This car was built at the Jefferson plant.

During that time frame, plants coded different options in different places on the tag.

According to the white book, the engine code would be under P for a Jefferson built car.

At several plants, if the standard engine was installed, they did not code it. (Third picture is of a LR built car with no engine code under the AB)

The 413 engine codes for 64 were 07, 13, and 15; none of which appear on the original poster's tag.
1964 engine codes ranged from 02 -15

I do not have alot of info for pre 67ish codes, but as I was discussing with a friend about this today. Someone could have ordered it as a 361 vehicle, and a 413 from the same dealer, then having them do the swap before he took possession of the car. It is hard to say, but I was only saying that the engine and car being about a month apart, and the engine predating the car, the scenario is plausable.

The codes I do have in a few old magazines show a plausable trend in the codes. An A2 for a 225-6 and an A7 for a 226, my book showed an A5* to be a 361 2bbl, so your previous comments about the standard motor make sense too. Without an original bill of sale, anything is possible, and completely unverifiable.

My 66 is a St Louis car and the engine/trans codes are under AB as well.
Thanks for sharing the other plant info.

It might just be my old eyes playing tricks on me ... but it looks like there might be the remnants of a 2 under the P in the original posters photo.

I see what you mean but I am afraid there is no 2 under the P.

I will have to get under the seats to try and find some paperwork.

Thanks all.

Which reinforces the point that the car came with the standard engine and the 413 was installed somewhere along the way.
