back in the early 90-s thru 2000-s,mopars were Everywheres down in NC.
heres a wacky story,i had gone to look at a duster,my friend bought the other car, another 340 duster.
the one i was looking at,was a 70 green 318 car,and i think i paid like 200? or 300 for it and it ran,sort of.
at the same place was an older dodge quadcab dodge pickup, around a 75ish i think, and those 4 doors back then were kinda rare.
had a utility box on it too,i ended up buying that one too,for around 700.
i had to do some cosmetic work and swap carbs, ran fine after that.
got them both home, about a week later a diff guy swings by and likes the truck a lot, wants to do a trade, says he has a 360 duster.
im mildly interested,so i drive over there in the truck.
this guy lives down the road about 3 miles from where i Got the truck! lol.
i pull up and its a factory purple 74 duster with a 4 speed, and Huge meats, pipes, cage, drag seats, the whole nine yards,an absolute monster of a racecar.
he fires it up and drives it around his yard briefly,im like hell yeah lets do the trade !!
i...did not drive it myself.
i go to leave, pull out on the road and hit 60 in .04 seconds....and thats....it....
4:56 in the back,im literally driving this car down the road at 55 Screaming.
get back home like an hour later,im deaf,my nerves are shot from watching the gauges,im done with that car already....
didnt even register it,just put it up for sale right away and then another guy stops by.
he had a 73 cuda,a perfect body and interior but dead motor,i got a grand for the duster plus the cuda.
i had a big block in that car in 3 days ;)
LOL
the other brand
i had scored a 72 400 bb Air Grabber roadrunner that no-one else could buy,it sat right out in plain sight at a railroad crossing even.
somehow?? managed to talk the owner into selling it to me for a grand !! his price !!
and i bought it,did some exhaust work and interior work.
yes it was an original and one of the last air grabbers ever made.
a youngun came by and wanted to do a trade.
said he had a Amx javelin, and that made me take notice....went over to his place, and its a 73 amx 401 4 speed car,an absolutely Beautiful car, near mint,my car has primer spots on it.
turns out his dad got him that car,and was supervising the whole trade deal, which i was fine with.
dad tells me the engine is blueprinted and balanced and built.
the kid took me out back, showed me extra wing and fiberglass hoods, which i left there like a young dumb moron!! lol.
i ended up making a deal for the car,a trade, and a new holley carb, because the kid said the car didnt run right, and 500 bucks Cash to me.
Good money back then.
drove the car home and sure enough,it was a dog,no balls at all.
odd thing was,if you were under the hood working the throttle, the engine revved up like it was a dragon.
started looking around and discovered the Wedge of Wood underneath the gas pedal carpet ;)
apparently dad didnt trust junior to be able to handle the full beans.
took the wedge out,and didnt need a new carb, boy did that car Run.
memorable notes,
the dad had a Super cool 413 crossram motor freshly built on a stand in the garage,he was a total mopar guy,had a challenger and a cuda in the garage too.
no clue how or even why they acquired that amx,but it was one of the best cars i ever owned, and cemented my love for those underdogs.
