How hard will this motor be to sell,
1972 440 block, steel crank, eagle rods, custom pistons, indy heads, intake, valley pan, harland sharp roller rockers, roller cam (under 600 lift), msd pro billet distributor, aluminum water pump, $600 dampner, $1000 carb, etc etc etc... Motor was refreshed with new bearings, pistons, rings, the indy heads, and the cam shaft, it was never ran since it was finished, $15,800 in receipts. My buddy wants to sell it fast, problem is its a strong 13 to one compression motor so it pretty race for the street limiting its potential buyers. The carb is new in the box, the intake and heads were machined so there is NO gasket needed in between them, its a really serious motor, has external oil system because the head ports are too large to allow for internal oiling...

So what would be a good price to ask, think parting it out would be a better option???? Looking for opinions... And if anyone would be interested the motor is available any time in RI/CT...

Intake and heads machined to where no gasket is required on the intake? I haven't heard of that before, I guess its possible with a good sealer. Anyone heard of this ? Does it work ok?

I know fast by gast in new york did that to 2 stroke motorcycle heads, but used some type of high strength sealant on there.

May have better luck parting it out. Most people would want to tear it down anyway, and re check all the clearances.

What damper is $600? The most expensive ATI that Summit sells is under $400.

I assume the external oiling indicated Indy 440 -1 heads?

It would help to know who made the pistons, crank, rods, cam, etc. to help assess the price.

I'd also re-check the cam specs because having high flowing intake ports, manifold and 13:1 compression needs much more than .600" valve lift.

Sounds like a nice engine!

The builder and machinist is pretty well known {his cars{engines} are all over the old drag racing mags}, I dont think I would rip anything down to recheck his clearances, and this was his personal engine. He told me it took 4+ hours of machine work with 2 guys to match the intake and heads perfectly...

The engine has a modest cam for what it is, he says you can go much hotter, the grind he had made was specific for a heavy car, the rotating assembly is light, I guess its a good recipe that he used for a long time, has time slips pics and maybe even vids of the last time he ran it down the track before he rebuilt it, it will move a 3K lb vehicle in the 9's...

I am not sure what balancer it is, I know its the race approved and I seen the receipt for almost $600, it surprised me too, but it is what it is..

someone can score this motor before it hits ebay, no one except me and the people reading this post know it is for sale or exists...

Probably going to have to take a bath on it. Muscle motors sells a pump gas stoker big block that makes similar power for 11k. With 15.8k in reciepts and wanting a quick sale, its going to be tough.

Indy sells some pretty tough motors for around 10k. I would just pick a starting price put some ads out and see what happens.

And those crate motors from Indy and MM come dyno-tuned with printout, broken in and warranteed. The builder info would need to be provided and likely contacted directly. A LOT of good faith is involved in a sale like this and I would agree going to have to take a bath on it as a complete build. Parting may take longer but would re-coup more of the costs

how much work is done to the heads and which ones are they? flow #'s

I think he will give me the engine for $6 to 6500 cash (he has come to terms with the fact he is never going to race again and its just sitting there), I have no use for it but if its a really good deal I will buy it to someday resell, what do you think?

Or if anyone on here is local and interested come up with cash and we can go get it....

I figure its a steal in the 6's since the heads, carb, ignition are worth about that...

any peripheral parts that are new in box could be sold separately, prolly the best way out to part off some stuff.

not gonna go "quick" unless its in the sub 7k range i suspect.

It's most likely worth the most split up as a top end package, short block, and maybe sell off the carb headers, etc. It really depends on the rotating assembly though. If it's a Callies crank swinging Oliver rods with Diamond pistons on the end you are going to make money. If it is one of the ching-chong-wing-wong crank and rods with icon pistons you will probably have to work to get your money back. Also if the heads are ported by someplace reputable that would be a step in the right direction $$$ wise. It is not uncommon to see 50k build engines for 15-20k used and a 15-20k engine ends up being 5-10k or so. My 2 cents anyway...
